Primary Art

Term 2 Primary Art Wrap Up
JUNIOR PRIMARY
Foundation
Foundation students began the term with their shooting stars which are currently being displayed in the PLC. This activity included learning about the primary and secondary colours and shape. The students also improved upon their cutting, glueing, printing and folding skills.
The students went onto creating crayon leaf rubbings with the autumn leaves and painted over them. This was focussing on texture and pattern as well as rubbing skills.
After this they created their beautiful warm and cool coloured birds. This activity focussed on learning the warm and cool colours, drawing, painting, pattern and shape. These are displayed in the Art room and the following students will have theirs displayed at Brewer’s Table - Bonnie Pink, Maeve O’Keefe, Allie Moffat and Audrey Benbow - congratulations to those students. Some of these birds will be displayed in the Admin building as well as meeting rooms.
The students then went onto learning about the abstract artist Wassily Kandinsky and created Kandinsky inspired paintings. The students listened to different types of music and drew how the music made them feel and used the corresponding colours that went with those feelings. Kandinsky could see colours when he heard music and heart music when he saw colours. These paintings will be displayed in the PLC.
Lastly this term the Foundation students had their first experience with clay at primary school and created birds out of clay. They learnt how to make hollow pinch pots and how to score the clay to join pieces together. They also learnt how to create different shapes adding details with clay implements. These will be fired and painted next term when they have dried out. These birds are going to be displayed in the garden near the Art room on metal rods.

Kandinsky Paintings
Years 1 and 2
The students began the term with printing using geli plates. This was something completely new to them and they enjoyed the experience. They experimented with leaf prints, using stamps to create patterns and drawing pictures to come up with a variety of prints. These are currently displayed in the Art room.
The students then used another printing technique to create beehive paintings. Bubble wrap was used to create the beehive pattern and the students painted bees and flowers over the top. These were finished off with black markers to add detail to the bees. Through this process the students learnt a new printing process, how to draw bees and beehives and learnt about pollination and why bees are so important to the planet.
Their final activity for the term was to make clay monsters which they greatly enjoyed. The students learnt how to make different shapes and to use different implements as well as their hands to manipulate the clay. They also learnt how to score the clay to join pieces. These monsters will be fired and painted next term when they have dried out. We look forward to seeing how these turn out!

Middle Primary
Year 3 and 4 students have been working on a multi-media project this term. These abstract pieces have been created on paper with water colour paint, paint markers, fine liners, gel markers and embroidery. These pieces have been inspired by the work of Ana Falcetta, a Canadian abstract artist. https://www.anafalceta.com/ The students have enjoyed learning new skills and putting them all together into one piece. At this stage the work of Anthea Symons 3/4C and Isabel Stolz 3/4C will be displayed at Brewer’s Table.
The students found embroidery challenging however, their skills drastically improved over time.

Year 5
Year 5 students have also been working on a multi-media project this term. These abstract pieces have been created on paper with water colour paint, paint markers, fine liners, gel markers and embroidery and are also inspired by the work of Ana Falcetta, a Canadian abstract artist. https://www.anafalceta.com/
Some of these pieces are stunning and will be displayed at Brewer’s Table next term hopefully as well as in offices in the school.
Lots of focus needed with embroidery!
Works in progress
Year 6
At the beginning of this term the Year 6 students finished off their sketches of sunflowers in a jug. This was a long process as it involved learning how to draw using shape, creating form by adding dimension and value by creating light and dark areas, including shadows, and finishing off with detail. Four of these will be displayed at Brewer’s Table, these include sketches by Ella D’Andrea, Maya Enrico, Sky Aquino and Aubrey Parkey. The students did a very good job at their first proper sketching attempt.
Work to be displayed at Brewers Table
This term the Year 6 students have learnt about Abstract Art and some abstract artists. They have done their own research on an artist of their choice and have annotated a piece of their artwork using the seven Elements of Art - Line, Shape, Colour, Texture, Form, Value and Space. The students have learnt about ‘Biomorphic Art’ which is abstract art based on nature, it represents living organisms and has organic shapes and lines to portray movement that morphs into itself. They are in the process of creating these art pieces from watercolour paint and black markers of different thicknesses. The students used the watercolour technique of ‘Wet on wet’ to create these begin these artworks.

The kids are really proud of their artwork and have made a tremendous effort in producing their best work. I’m looking forward to seeing what they create next term.
