PBL at St Joseph's - Why we use a positive recognition system
At St Joseph's Mernda, our Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) framework helps create a safe, respectful and engaging environment where every student can thrive. Research shows that students are more likely to repeat behaviours that are recognised and celebrated, so we focus on acknowledging positive choices that reflect our school expectations.
Students receive regular verbal praise from staff, helping them understand and repeat behaviours such as being respectful, responsible, safe and kind. They may also earn PBL tokens, which recognise positive actions and encourage students to consistently demonstrate our school values.
To strengthen the connection between home and school, verbal praise and PBL tokens can be converted into ClassDojo points. This allows students and families to celebrate positive behaviour and track progress throughout the year.
Positive recognition helps students:
- Develop confidence and self-esteem.
- Build positive habits and social skills.
- Feel valued and connected to the school community.
- Understand what successful behaviour looks like in different settings.
Take ownership of their actions and choices.
By recognising positive behaviours, we create a culture where students are motivated to make good choices and contribute positively to our school environment.
We appreciate the support of our families in reinforcing these positive behaviours at home and working together to help every child flourish.
