 5/6 CLASSROOM

The final two weeks of Term 2 have been busy in Grade 5/6, with students completing assessments and finishing off their learning for the semester. We have also enjoyed a range of special activities and events. I have been proud of the effort and persistence students have shown throughout this busy period and look forward to finishing the term on a positive note.

English

In English, students have been using a DIAL template to gather information about Ruby, a character from the novel Us Mob Walawurru. They have identified quotes from the text to support their ideas and written inferences to explain what these details reveal about Ruby and why events may have occurred throughout the story.

We have also begun reading the text Free Diving, which explores the experiences of Aboriginal free divers who worked in the pearling industry along the Western Australian coast in the late 1800s. Students have been learning about the history of pearling and developing their understanding of the pearl-making process, while reflecting on the courage, resilience and experiences of the people featured in the story.

Maths

In Maths, students have been investigating decimals, with a focus on tenths, hundredths and thousandths. They have been identifying the value of each digit in a range of decimal numbers and using this understanding to compare and order decimals. Students have also been placing decimals on number lines and exploring numbers that are greater than and less than a given value, helping to strengthen their understanding of place value and number relationships.

Art

In Art, students explored the beauty of city landscapes by creating a Melbourne skyline artwork. They discussed the features of the Melbourne cityscape, including the reflections seen in the Yarra River, and considered what the scene might look, sound and feel like. Students then designed their own skyline using a variety of building shapes and heights before using water and paint to create a reflected image beneath their artwork. Once dry, students will outline their buildings with black marker to make the skyline stand out. Through this activity, students explored how reflections can be used in art to create realism and visual impact.

Religion

In Religion, students explored the parable of the Prodigal Son (Luke 15:11–32), examining the perspectives and experiences of the younger son, the father and the elder son. Through discussion and analysis, students considered how each character responded to forgiveness, reconciliation and change. This helped students develop their understanding that reconciliation is an ongoing process that involves choices, growth and transformation.

Inquiry

In Inquiry, students have been learning about the sustainable practices used by First Nations peoples and comparing them with those used by Indigenous communities around the world. They have explored how First Nations peoples care for Country and Place, researched traditional sustainability practices, and discussed how this knowledge can help us live more sustainably today. Students have enjoyed making connections between different cultures and recognising the important role Indigenous knowledge plays in caring for the environment.

‘Share the Warmth’ Coat Drive

Our Grade 6 leaders are collecting winter coats and jackets to support members of our community during the colder months.

All donations will be given to the local St Vincent de Paul Rushworth Conference, who will distribute them to individuals and families in need this winter.

If you have any coats or jackets in good condition that are no longer needed, donations can be dropped off at the School Office until Friday 26 June (the last day of Term 2).

Thank you for supporting this student-led initiative and helping us share warmth, kindness and care with others this winter. 💙
