Grade 3/4s

The Grade 3/4 students have worked hard this term on their learning. They have learned about living and non-living things and are currently learning about colour.

Over the past two weeks, the students have been focusing on their unit ‘Colour’, where they are learning about light sources and how we see colour. They have learned about how light moves through space and shadows are formed. They have also been experimenting with prisms to split light into the colour spectrum. They have also learned the acronym ROY G BIV to help them remember the colours of a rainbow.

For the last week of term, students will be focusing on describing why some objects are coloured and showing their learning from the unit.

Focus vocabulary for the rest of the term:

Light Spectrum: The range of different colours produced when light passes through a prism or a drop of water.

Light source: Something that produces light. For example: Sun, fire, light globe, laptop.

Reflector: Something that reflects light, but does not produce its own light. For example: the Moon, mirror, metal objects.

Grade 5/6s

The Grade 5/6 students have had a very busy term, where they have engaged with a lot of various science content. They learned about plant adaptations for survival, natural disasters, and shadows.

Over the past two weeks the students have been focusing on their unit ‘Making shadows’. They have been learning about how light travels from a source through the environment and scatters of objects allowing us to see them. They have been applying this knowledge to ray drawings and investigating how shadows are formed.

For the last week of term, the Grade 5/6 students will be engaging in a variety of experiments to investigate what can affect the formation of a shadow, and showing their knowledge that they have gained this unit.

Focus vocabulary for this fortnight:

Opaque: If something is opaque, it does not let light through, so you cannot see through it.

Shadow: The dark shape formed when an opaque object stops light from reaching a surface.

Transparent: If an object or substance is transparent, you can see through it.
