From Manipulatives to the Basketball Court!
This term, Year 7 students discovered that maths extends well beyond the textbook, applying their learning in the classroom to real-life scenarios. Through hands-on lessons, using manipulatives and physical materials, students explored perimeter, area, circumference of 2D shapes, as well as the volume of 3D, turning abstract formulas into something they could measure and observe directly. Students measured classroom surfaces, whiteboards and cylinders, helping them to see exactly what "area" or "volume" represents in real objects.

The highlight of the unit was a fieldwork session on the school basketball court. Equipped with measuring tapes and trundle wheels, students worked in teams to measure the court's dimensions, calculate its area and perimeter and explore circular features such as the centre circle. Students also applied their understanding of angles, identifying and classifying angles found across the court's lines and markings. Students demonstrated strong collaboration and a real sense of achievement as they applied the same measurement skills used by architects, engineers and sports designers.
This combination of manipulatives, hands-on classroom activities and fieldwork helped Year 7 students to build genuine confidence with measurement, providing a memorable reminder that maths is everywhere.
This experience reflects Reservoir High School's commitment to bringing mathematical concepts to life, through engaging, practical learning experiences, and we look forward to seeing students continue to build on these skills as the year progresses.
