Week Nine and Ten in STEAM
Over the last couple of weeks the Preps, Grade Ones and Grade Twos have continued with their mini unit on light and sound. They investigated how sound vibrations travel, how human ears receive sound and the rainbow of colours that make up light. They experimented with tuning forks, colour mixing glasses and optical prisms. They looked at the story of How Seeds Grow by Helene Jordan and began mapping out our plan for seedling planting in the vegetable garden next term. The Preps, Grade Ones and Twos also took a look at machine learning and played quick Quick, Draw, testing to see if the machine could guess what they were drawing. They added their drawings to the world's largest doodling data set. Have a go yourself here.
The Grade Threes and Fours looked at how some traditional manufacturing processes are more environmentally friendly than modern-day ones due to their use of natural materials and hand making techniques. They revisited some of their prior learning about natural and biodegradable fibres and looked at the physics concept of tension in an activity where they created handmade rope using cotton and wool threads. The Grade Fours also got out into the vegetable garden and did some weeding in prepareation for planting next term.
In week nine and ten the Grade Five students continued to work on their upcycled textile project where the components of very old ACPS uniforms, that were damaged and no longer fit for wearing, were turned into creative new items. Some of these items include bags, cushions, teddy bears, scrunchies, bow ties, face masks and eye patches. The students will put the final touches on these items at the beginning of next term and look forward to showing you the results soon.
In week nine the Grade Sixes had a double STEAM session in which they conducted the Elephant's Toothpaste experiment, battled it out in a team science quiz and participated in a Lego bridge challenge where they had to construct a bridge that would span a 30 centimetre gap between tables and hold the weight of a tub of playdough.
Lego Club
Lego Club runs on Mondays during lunchtime in the STEAM room. Everyone is welcome!
