Year 9 Zoo Excursion

A group of Year 9 students attended the Zoo on Thursday 19th September where they participated in a class on Evolution. The group were given a lesson by Zoo education member Simon on the four pillars of Evolution.

1. Variation: differences within the same species
2. Inheritance: DNA/characteristics an animal gets from its parents
3. Natural selection: has a group/individual adapted to new environments
4. Time: thousands of years in most cases

Students were also able to see and touch the sculls and hides of a Lion and Tiger to see how different adaptations have taken place that enable that Big Cat to thrive in its current environment.

Following the lesson, students had an opportunity to explore all parts of the Zoo in small groups.
