Year 5 Great Aussie Bush Camp

Last week, our Year 5 students embarked on an unforgettable journey to the Great Aussie Bush Camp in Tea Gardens! Over the course of their adventure, students engaged in a variety of team-building activities which fostered collaboration and resilience.

They tackled the challenge of getting their entire team onto a crate using only a rope, honing their communication skills and teamwork. In addition, students tested their aim with archery, crafted damper in bushcraft sessions and soared through the air on the giant swing. The high ropes course and crate climbs pushed their limits, encouraging them to face their fears and support one another.

Filled with laughter and camaraderie, this experience not only created lasting memories but also helped our students build resilience and confidence. A huge thank you to our teachers and camp leaders for making this adventure possible!

Aunty Bibi Aboriginal Art Work Shop

This week, a number of students have been involved in a unique Aboriginal art workshop run by Aunty Bibi, a local Aboriginal artist who works closely with AECG (Aboriginal Education Consultative Group). This workshop provides a hands-on experience for talented students to learn about traditional techniques and understand the cultural significance behind the artwork. The artworks the students are working on will be installed as totem poles on the columns of our new buildings.

NSWEduChat trial update

This year Chatswood Public School has been participating in the trial of NSWEduChat. This has presented us with an exciting opportunity that has the potential to shape the way students and teachers use technology in learning.

NSWEduChat is a generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) tool owned and designed by the NSW Department of Education.

The NSW Department of Education prioritises student safety as a key focus. Unlike ChatGPT or other third-party GenAI tools, NSWEduChat is suitable for school-aged children. NSWEduChat is built inside the department’s firewall and has been created with safeguards that other GenAI tools do not have.

At Chatswood Public School, we are committed to providing evidence-based, quality learning opportunities for our students. We are one of only 50 schools to be selected to first explore how NSWEduChat can be used effectively in classrooms.  NSWEduChat is hosted entirely within the department’s systems. The tool provides a safe and secure environment for teachers and students (Stages 3-6) to use GenAI in teaching and learning.

The trial of NSWEduChat will run to the end of 2024.

From week 10 of this term, in-app surveys will appear which are optional for students to complete. The purpose of these surveys is to inform potential future phases of the trial, as well as activities such as monitoring, research and evaluation.

Department personnel may visit the school to gather feedback and photograph or video participants. Only students whose parents/carers have provided ‘permission to publish’ will be filmed.

At all times the current school rules, policies and procedures continue to apply for everyone involved. Parents/carers will be sent an updated data privacy notice to read. If a parent/carer decides to have their child opt out of the NSWEduChat trial, this can be communicated to the school.

If you would like to discuss this opportunity in relation to your child’s learning or broader school experience, please contact the school.

We look forward to continuing our exploration of NSWEduChat to discover how GenAI could enrich teaching and learning at Chatswood Public School.

Community Charter

The School Community Charter outlines the responsibilities of parents, carers, educators and school staff in NSW public schools to ensure our learning environments are collaborative, supportive and cohesive.

Supporting the Transition to School

Supporting the Transition to School Video Series

Starting school is a very exciting time for children. They’ll meet friends, learn new skills and build relationships with their teachers. Almost 90% of a child’s brain development happens before they turn five years old. Skills and behaviours learnt during the early years can help children to have a smooth start to kindergarten and throughout life.

This video series provides practical ideas to help parents, carers, Early Childhood Educators and teachers to support a positive start to school.
