LITERACY:
During term 4 we continued with DEAR (Drop Everything And Read) for 15 minutes at the beginning of each session. The students enjoyed this time, and our hope is that it is developing their love of reading.
The students completed their Keynote presentations, on a topic of their choice, that was related to social media. We studied social media in detail in term 3 so the students had been provided with quite detailed information around many areas related to this subject. There were a number of requirements that each student had to meet. One of them was to research their particular topic, select only relevant information and take notes in point form. They then had to write this information in their own words. One of the reasons for this was to stop information being copied and pasted without them learning anything. When students write information in their own words, it lets us know that they have understood what they have read.
Testing each student occurred at the end of November and early December. We test the student's ability to read more complex words, to check their ability to comprehend different levels of text and also their individual spelling ability. We then compare these results to see what change there has been from our testing earlier in the year.
During term 4 we continued with our spelling program, and we are pleased with the progress the students who regularly attend class made. Just like every area of literacy, attending the class consistently is the most effective way of learning and improving.
We finished the term with some entertaining learning activities in one of our Literacy classes each week. These activities were engaging, and the students seemed to enjoy them. Literacy can be fun!
NUMERACY:
In Term 4 Mathematics, we focused on Statistics and Probability, exploring real-world applications through collaborative learning groups. Students investigated topics such as UV ratings, daily water consumption needs, and household water usage, applying mathematical concepts to meaningful, practical scenarios. Additionally, we completed ACER testing, providing valuable insights into each student's progress.
Everyone should be proud of the growth they have demonstrated this term, showcasing their hard work and dedication to learning.
