Student Voice and Agency

At Springvale Rise Primary School, the Heights Campus MLC’s experience with the baby rabbits is a perfect example of how we actively amplify Student Voice and Agency in our school. During Term 4, as part of their Life Cycles unit, students took a hands-on approach to learning by caring for the rabbits and exploring everything they could about their needs and development. The students showed great responsibility, taking charge of the rabbits' care and fully engaging in the learning process.

But what truly stands out in this story is how the students went beyond the classroom to make their voices heard. When they grew so attached to the rabbits and discovered the importance of having them as part of their classroom program — they took action. Through thoughtful, persuasive letters, the students advocated for keeping the rabbits at school, demonstrating how their ideas and opinions are valued. Even the younger students in F/1B joined in, writing their own letters to Mrs. Cottier, showing that Student Voice is something we nurture and support at every level.

This collective effort is a powerful example of how we empower students to take ownership of their learning and make a real impact on decisions that affect their school community. The students didn’t just learn about life cycles—they learned about agency, advocacy, and how to communicate persuasively for a cause they care about.

In response to their efforts, the school has embraced the idea, and the rabbits are now not only a part of our learning but also contribute to our wellbeing program. We believe animals can help students self-regulate and manage their emotions, and having the rabbits as a permanent part of the school is an exciting way to integrate this into our students’ daily lives.

The new hutch and the (soon to arrive) outdoor play area for the rabbits is just one example of how the school listens to and acts on student input. This experience highlights our commitment to amplifying Student Voice—making sure that students feel empowered to contribute, influence decisions, and take an active role in their school community.

Young Planners

Our amazing MLC students have also been hard at work identifying what makes our community a happier, safer, and more connected place to live! Through real-life photos, they explored what helps them feel healthy and well, then used their voices to select the top four things they value most. After some team collaboration, they created a powerful poster to tell their story, which they’ll soon present to the Mayor!

This project has been ongoing throughout the year, with students meeting regularly to share ideas and work together. We’re so proud of their dedication and teamwork!

Stay Safe, Take Care, Keep Smiling!
