The students are very excited to perform for the St Aidan’s community at the End of Term Concert on Friday 6 December at 9am on the back playground. We hope that you are able to join us to celebrate the student’s musical achievements this term.
On 19 November, Year 5 students had the incredible opportunity to participate in an engaging and hands-on STEM incursion with Ranger Jamie Tours. The day was filled with exciting activities that sparked creativity, teamwork, and critical thinking. From investigating the effect of heat on the properties of materials and solving real-world engineering challenges to exploring the wonders of science and technology, everyone had an amazing time learning and collaborating. The students had the opportunity to engage in hands-on experiments (such as making their own slime), problem-solving tasks (like creating their own rockets), and innovative projects (including blowing up over two hundred ping pong balls), making it a truly memorable day.
On Monday 25 November, Year 5 students went to Maroubra Beach. The surf instructors explained to us what we were going to do and what to be aware of. The class applied zinc and sunscreen and we were then divided into two groups.
In the first group, the instructors explained what we had to do in order to glide on the water and prevent nose diving when boogie boarding. Everyone had a fun time boogie boarding and managed to catch a fine wave.
In the second group, the guides explained how to stand up on the surfing boards and other safety rules. After that, we spaced out in a line so we all don’t get bunched in the water as there could be collisions. Surfing was a bit more difficult than boogie boarding so not everyone got to stand up on their board; but everyone still had a great time.

On Tuesday 26 November, Year 6 had surfing lessons at Maroubra Beach with instructors from Let's Go Surfing who were very kind and helpful. They gave us a full understanding of how to be safe on the beach and how to surf. All the students used foam boards to boogie board and surf as they are the boards used for beginners. Year 6 learnt how to stand up on a surf board safely, how to spot a rip and how to observe the direction of the waves based on the way the wind is blowing. Surfing was an amazing experience.

On Tuesday 26 November, Year 2 students had an amazing time during a hands-on incursion all about the special places in Australia. With the help of friendly rangers, the children explored how places like beaches, farms, parks, and bushland are used, and what makes them unique.
The students loved getting involved in practical activities like building birdhouses, catching bugs, and creating habitats. Using real geographical tools, such as identification charts, they could classify their bug discoveries and learn about the connections people have with different environments.
This incursion was a great opportunity for the students to learn in a fun, interactive way, and they’ve come away with a greater appreciation for Australia’s amazing environments.
Samuel - My favourite part was catching bugs in the school environment. I caught a Roly Poly bug, an ant and a baby cockroach. We had to use little containers to catch and identify which bugs we found carefully.
Martina - I loved building the habitats out of the natural materials found on our playground. We worked as a team to make a habitat for an axolotl.
Olivia - My favourite part of the incursion was making a birdhouse out of cardboard. We got to design and decorate it. We left them on the playground and checked the next morning to see if we had a bird. We saw lots of little pecks on the birdhouses. I think the birds might have been trying to get in.
Oliver - I loved playing with the water and seeing how the different materials like sunscreen and paint changed the colour and texture of the water. We learnt that we need to be careful of what we put into our oceans and water.
On Wednesday 27 November, Year 3 explored chemical science in an incursion led by Mad About Science. We had a great time being detectives and uncovering the culprit who stole a $10 000 diamond whilst exploring different materials. We had to use our detective skills to analyse the evidence in front of us. We looked at fingerprints, footprints and bloodstains all leading up to one suspect. At the end of the incursion, we found out it was John who stole the diamond.

On Wednesday, Year 1 dived into an exciting Science incursion led by Mad About Science! The students explored the fascinating world of matter by getting hands-on with fun experiments. They created squishy, mysterious oobleck and marvelled at the bubbly chemical reactions caused by mixing bicarbonate of soda and vinegar. Science has never been so messy and magical!
