Fare Share Kitchen Excursion

Year 11

On Thursday, November 15th, a group of dedicated students from Tarneit Secondary College participated in the FareShare Schools in the Kitchen program, an initiative designed to teach students about food insecurity while making a real impact in their community. This hands-on program empowers students to not only learn about the challenges of food waste and food rescue but also develop essential skills in cooking, teamwork, and communication.

During their visit, the students worked alongside FareShare’s skilled chefs, contributing to a range of important tasks in the kitchen. This included:

  • Assembled 770 beef casserole and rice meals
  • Whole chickens (opened, seasoned, trayed & cooked) 127
  • Rice & lentils (decanted, ready to cook) x 3 cooks
  • Cut 200kg cauliflower
  • Prepared 40kg mushrooms
  • Folded tea towels & aprons
  • Cleaned and reset the kitchen

Their hard work and commitment provided much-needed nourishment for individuals facing food insecurity in our community, and the experience left a lasting impact on everyone involved. The program not only gave students a deeper understanding of the challenges faced by many but also reinforced the powerful message that everyone can play a role in helping others.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to the students of Tarneit Secondary College for their generosity and dedication. Their participation in the Schools in the Kitchen program has made a meaningful difference in the lives of those who benefit from FareShare's work. We hope this experience has inspired them to continue supporting their community, and we encourage other students to get involved through fundraising or organizing food drives to help FareShare continue its mission of rescuing food, cooking nutritious meals, and feeding those in need.
