Year 12s - Farewell and Best Wishes

As results come out, our Year 12's should look back with pride on their 13 years of schooling. They now go out into the real world as they take up university and TAFE courses, join the workforce, travel, move out of home (perhaps) and other exciting endeavours. Unfortunately, at this time of the year, the media sends out mixed messages. On one hand, we hear about super high achievers and their near perfect scores, together with messages about "you are more than just an ATAR score", and that's the message everyone needs to take away from the process. In 6 months or a year or 5 years or 30 years time, noone will know or care about a score based on some fleeting exams. Make the most of your opportunities, and approach the future as the amazing young people you all are. Stay in touch, as we love to hear about your adventures in whatever future endeavour you undertake.

VET

Our Year 9, 10, 11 and 12 students have embraced the world of VET with excitement and enthusiasm. It's a long process, but the vast majority of applicants have achieved a place in a VET program offered in our cluster or region. Students will be travelling to schools, private and public TAFE providers to undertake a wide range of courses. Just to list a few: Carpentry, Cookery, Hospitality, Child Care, Visual Design, IT, Mechanics, Engineering, Beauty, Hair, Horticulture, Plumbing, Screen and Media, Acting, Animal Care and Sound Production, not to forget our own inhouse program in Sport, Aquatics and Recreation. VET is now an important and accepted part of the VCE, and well done to those students who will venture out into the world of applied learning to study vocational subjects.

Head Start

Head Start is a Dept of Education program, that allows students to complete VCE, whilst undertaking an apprentice or traineeship, and studying at TAFE. In 2025, we will have students undertaking apprenticeships or traineeships in Mechanics, Retail, Carpentry and Cookery. This program is truly a Head Start into work.

Vocational Major

This program has continued to flourish with students taking up the option to study a more work-based course, commonly known as applied learning. VM students must complete a VET certificate over their two years in order to gain there VCE-VM. Our students are also required to find a part time job and undertake what is known as Structured Workplace Learning. VM students undertake a variety of practical, community-based activities such as fund raisers, mock job interviews and career presentations.

Year 12's, for example hosted a small celebration with a display of their all important careers portfolios. This is a culmination of their work over the last few years, especially around Careers, Workplace Experiences and their development of personal capabilities, the so-called 'Soft Skills', that employers really value. Again, as I write this article I know our Year 12 VM students are travelling, taking up (or continuing) apprenticeships, TAFE courses and new employment.

2025

Finally, for 2025, we look forward to year 9's undertaking their Morrisby Careers appraisals and interviews (starting Week 1 of Term 2) and Year 10's venturing out to work experience (the last week of Term 2). Our VET students mostly (but not all)  start on Feb 5th,  which will be here before we know it! Watch your school emails for more information!
