In Our Classrooms

PREP

In Curiosity,  the Prep students are really enjoying engaging with our unit - The World I Live In. They have explored different environments focusing on natural and manmade features through reading, discussions and play-based learning.

Students loved their excursion this week to Bundoora Park Farm which also supported their learning in Curiosity. It was a great first excursion for our Prep students - even though it was a rainy day. The highlight was the tractor ride through the bush exhibit and seeing kangaroos and emus. The students also loved patting the guinea pigs. Thanks to the parents who were able to come along and help out on this day.

To end the unit students will be demonstrating their new knowledge by completing a project.  Students will have the opportunity to make a diaorama, a poster or a book with their teacher's support.

YEAR 1

In Curiosity, students are really enjoying our unit Living Things. Students have been learning about animal features, classifying animals as mammals, reptiles and birds and learning about the different types of habitats that animals live in. The excursion to the Zoo certainly supported this unit. Students had the opportunity to see lots of different habitats and think about how the animal's features help them to live in their environment. At the end of this unit, students will create a model of an animal and its habitat.  This learning will then be shared with parents and families at the Year 1 Curiosity Expo.  Keep an eye out for more information about this event.

Our Year 1 students are really looking forward to their disco coming up on Friday, 29 November.  On this day students are invited to dress up and wear their dancing clothes to school for the day. Throughout the day, students will be involved in a number of fun activities including making a fun disco crown, having a disco in the PAC and enjoying a lunch of hot chips, a potato cake, and an icy pole. Please see Compass for the event details.

YEAR 2

In Curiosity, the students have been developing their scientific understanding of physical changes. In Week 10, we will have a curiosity expo to enable parents to come in and learn about materials and their properties. The students are looking forward to presenting the sculptures they have been creating and explaining the everyday materials they have used, the reason they chose them, and the properties of the materials. More information about this event will be sent out soon.

Year 2 students are also focusing on cooperative skills and problem-solving skills through games and participating in activities with different classes as part of PEP.  These experiences aim to support students in transitioning to Year 3 positively.

In PEP we have also been focusing on cyber safety and discussing in the classroom how to keep ourselves safe online and what to do when problems arise.  We would appreciate parents/carers continuing this conversation at home. eSafety Commissioner (https://www.esafety.gov.au/parents ) is a good resource for parents on how they can support their children and what to do when there is a problem.

YEAR 3

Year 3 students are in for an exciting and enriching few weeks! This week they will attend an incursion from Brainstorm Productions, where they’ll explore vital topics such as bullying, aggression, cyber safety, and strategies for managing difficult emotions. This interactive experience will help students build resilience and foster positive relationships both in and out of the classroom.

As part of their Curiosity unit, Year 3 will dive deeper into the world of living and non-living things, with an exciting Reptile Encounters incursion. Students will have the opportunity to meet and interact with a range of fascinating reptiles, learning about their habitats, characteristics, and the unique ways these animals fit into the natural world. This hands-on experience will bring their studies to life and provide a deeper understanding of biological classification and ecosystems.

The term will also see the students preparing for their Christmas Carols performance, as they get ready to spread some festive cheer. They are also looking forward to transitioning into Year 4 with a sense of accomplishment and excitement for the year ahead. It’s going to be a fun and busy term!

YEAR 4

This term in Year 4, we have many exciting upcoming events. In our Curiosity unit, students have been exploring the fascinating concept of forces. In the coming weeks, they will participate in a team-based design competition where they’ll need to create four different objects using only materials available in the classroom.

  • Challenge 1: Design a boat that can hold the most marbles.
  • Challenge 2: Create a parachute for a paperclip that falls the slowest.
  • Challenge 3: Build a ramp that allows a toy car to travel the slowest.
  • Challenge 4: Construct a paper airplane that flies the furthest when launched with a paperclip passenger.

Alongside these challenges, students are also beginning work on their Year 4 Passion Projects, which offer them the chance to explore and present an area of personal interest or passion. They’ve started planning and designing their projects during class time, adding their progress to their online portfolios. In the coming weeks, students will be encouraged to begin building and creating the physical components of their projects at home.

The Passion Projects will be showcased at our Year 4 iDiscover Exhibition, which will take place on Friday, December 13th, at 9:00 AM in the College Gym. This exhibition will be a wonderful opportunity for students to share their creativity and hard work with the school community.

YEAR 5

We’ve had a vibrant and busy time in Year 5, with our students engaged in exciting activities that bring learning to life!

Maths is Magic – 6th November. On the morning of the 6th, our Year 5 students participated in a fun-filled Maths is Magic event featuring five different rotations, each exploring a unique maths “trick.” Then, students attempted tessellations, inspired by M.C. Escher. Students got to see the “magic” behind mathematical concepts and gain new perspectives on problem-solving. These hands-on rotations brought joy and discovery to the day, sparking enthusiasm and curiosity in our young mathematicians. Thank you to all the parents who made it, the students loved having you there.

Preparing for Year 6 Interschool Sports. This semester, students have been preparing for Year 6 interschool sports by participating in TeeBall, basketball, netball, and AFL as part of our intra-school sports rotations. These sessions have provided an excellent foundation in skill-building, teamwork, and resilience, setting them up for a strong start in inter-school competitions next year. It’s been fantastic to watch their progress and see them enjoy each sport. We would love to see as many Future Year 6's part take in these inter-school events next year.

Basketball Regionals – 11th November. Our girls’ basketball team is gearing up to represent Hazel Glen College at the Regional Championships on Monday, 11th November. Their dedication and teamwork have been outstanding, and we’re excited to see them put their skills to the test. Best of luck to our team—we know you’ll do us proud!

Thank you for your continued support and encouragement!

YEAR 4 HOOP TIME REGIONAL FINALS

During Term 2, 50 of our Year 4 Students had a day out at Mill Park Stadium competing in the Hoop Time Basketball competition. We were very successful, winning all divisions and having three teams make it to the Regional Finals.

Our three teams were training hard and this term the Regional Finals came around at Diamond Valley Sports and Fitness Centre. Our teams had fantastic days out with all of our students trying their best and representing Hazel Glen College proudly by showing the four Rs.

Our girl's team made it all the way to the playoff game to make it to the State Finals but narrowly lost.

Our students worked really hard and they should be commended for their efforts to make it this far into the competition. Well Done Hazel Glen College!
