Music Excursions in 2024
This year has been filled with wonderful opportunities for TLSC instrumental students to immerse themselves in some outstanding performances across Melbourne. From classical ensembles to full orchestras. TLSC students have had close encounter to witness musical mastery in action. Here’s a look back at three incredible excursions.
Quercus Trio- A blend of the Old and New - Earlier in Term 2, TLSC instrumental students were treated to a performance by the Quercus Trio at Hanson Dyer Hall. Quercus Trio, whose debut album "Australian Horn Trios" was released by ABC Classic to critical acclaim in 2023, perform a mixture of old and new works for horn trio, including a world premiere of Alan Holley's "This Time of Light," a performance of Elena Kats-Chernin’s Velvet Revolution and the evocative Quatre Pieces for horn violin and piano by romantic French composer Charles Koechlin. The concert featured both classical and contemporary compositions, giving students the chance to hear how the timelessness of classical music blends seamlessly with more modern pieces. The Quercus Trio’s performance was not only mesmerizing but also offered our students valuable insights into chamber music dynamics and the unique sound of horn trios.
Melbourne Symphony Orchestra Open Rehearsal – A Behind-the-Scenes Experience - In Term 3, TLSC students attended the open rehearsal of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra (MSO) at the Iwaki Auditorium. Conducted by Jen Winley, the orchestra rehearsed Brahms' Symphony No. 1, a true masterpiece of the Romantic period repertoire. This was more than just a performance; it was an educational deep dive into the process of orchestral preparation. Students witnessed firsthand the discipline, precision, and teamwork required to bring such complex music to life. It was a fascinating look behind the curtain, showing how conductors and musicians work together to create a seamless performance.
Mimir Chamber Music Festival – Celebrating 10 Years of Excellence - The second Term 3 excursion saw TLSC students returning to Hanson Dyer Hall for the 10th anniversary of the Mimir Chamber Music Festival. The Mimir Festival was founded in Fort Worth, Texas more than 25 years ago, and since 2013 the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music hosts the annual Australian edition of the Mimir Chamber Music Festival, sharing its energies with Melbourne audiences. This special occasion featured an evening of chamber music, Cello Sonata by Rachmaninov, String Quartet by Antonin Dvorak, with performances from some of the finest musicians in the genre. Students experienced intimate, expressive performances, showcasing the tight-knit collaboration that defines chamber music. The evening was a testament to the power of small ensembles and the beauty of chamber works.
These excursions have not only broadened students' musical horizons but also deepened their appreciation for the artistry and effort behind every note. We would like to use this opportunity to sincerely thank Ms De La Fuente, Mr Dedes, Ms Turok, Ms Norwood, Ms Mildenhall and Ms Jones for accompanying and supporting students in these excursions. We look forward to offering more such enriching experiences in the future!
