The focus for the Sustainability Team in Term 3 is biodiversity. The team is working on three projects:
1. Working in collaboration with VCE/VM students to make nesting boxes to improve biodiversity in the Old Pound Reserve.
2. Organising Schools Tree Day to increase the number of plants out the front of the new B-Wing building.
3. Movie Week – will be held in Week 9. The movie will be free to watch during lunchtimes; snacks purchased will raise money to support the Mountain Pygmy Possum which is our Fighting Extinction animal.
These projects are running in conjunction with specific sustainability curriculum at different levels of the school. Year 7 will be creating awareness campaigns to fight extinction of chosen animals (Science). Year 8 are investigating the problems and solutions to ocean plastic waste (Science and Humanities) and Year 9 are investigating the relationship between human behaviour and climate change (Science and Humanities).
Stay tuned to see how these projects develop over the term.
The Victorian Department of Education is conducting a student climate survey to better understand children and young people’s views on climate change and ensure that our education system is responsive to their needs and will best equip them with the knowledge and skills critical for their future.
The survey is made up of 14 questions about student knowledge of and engagement with climate change. There is a version tailored for primary school students in Years 4 to 6 and another version for students in Years 7 to 12.
The survey will be conducted outside of school and can be accessed via the link below. The survey is conducted anonymously; however, students are asked to get the approval of their parent or guardian before participating.
The information gained through the survey will be used to discern how Victorian children and young people want to learn about climate change at school. This research will inform curriculum and program design in the future.
