Hands on Learning

The Hands on Learning Program continues to go from strength to strength here at Lilydale Heights College, with the program expanding to a second day from the beginning of Semester 2. The hands-on engagement and wellbeing program is now running on a Wednesday and Friday and continues to support students from Year 7 to Year 10 under the Four Pillars of Hands on Learning –

  • A place to belong to
  • People to belong to
  • Meaningful projects
  • A chance to give back

Our new Wednesday group has had an amazing start to term up in the HoL precinct, getting to know each other, cooking and eating together and getting their hands on some of the tools they will be using moving forward. They participated in different tool testing workshops and put what they had learned into practice by assembling and painting wooden folder holders, which will be attached to the Independent Reading book nooks around the College. They also got stuck into some landscaping, helping to mulch the HoL precinct. We look forward to growing this group and getting stuck into many more meaningful projects in the Hol precinct, around the school and in the community, throughout the rest of the year.

Our Friday group picked up where they left off in Semester 1, finishing the last of the Independent Reading book nooks which will be put in place in the stadium. The students have also been constructing a large blackboard on wheels for the school production of ‘Matilda’, while continuing to improve the Hol space by repairing the concrete driveway and continuing to clad the inside of the Hol shed.

While we are proud of the projects we have completed, we are even more proud of how all of the Hol students appreciate the opportunity they have been given and that they continue to show up and support each other, put themselves to work and have as much fun as possible in the process.
