Semester Two offers an opportunity for students to re-calibrate and tweak learnings from the first half of the year in order to make improvements. Year level assemblies took place in week one where key messages were shared around the pre-conditions to learning and achieving success at school. The pre-conditions to a successful Semester Two are summarised below, and we encourage conversations at home around these pre-conditions.
Box Hill High School is proud of its image in the community and an important part of this is the school uniform. Therefore, all students are required to wear the full school uniform, including the school shoes, shirts, jumpers or jackets according to the season. Our uniform ensures inclusive dress for all and should instil a sense of pride when worn. Connection to school is hindered when the full uniform is not worn. BHHS uniform requirements can be found by visiting https://www.boxhillhs.vic.edu.au/page/175
We all want our students to get a great education, and the building blocks for a great education begin with students coming to school each and every day. Students develop good habits by going to school every day – habits that are necessary to succeed after school, whether in the workplace or in further study. Missing school can have a big impact on students academically and socially. It can affect their academic results and, just as importantly, it can affect their relationships with other students, and lead to social isolation. There is no safe number of days for missing school – each day a student misses puts them behind and can affect their educational outcomes. Each missed day is associated with falling behind in subject topics and assessment tasks. Attendance also includes ensuring students arrive to school on time and are punctual to class.
Parents/carers are asked to sit with their child to unpack the Semester One Report and identify areas of strength and areas for growth. This is an important part of student personal goal setting for Semester Two. Specifically, Work Habits identified in the report across all subjects are an excellent summary of engagement in class against our BHHS Learner Behaviours.
Evaluating academic success for Assessment Tasks against the BHHS Achievement Standards should also be analysed to determine factors that contributed to achievements obtained and indicate where improvements can be made.
At all times, students should look to consistently model a positive attitude, show respect, and actively demonstrate pro-social behaviours. Students are encouraged to engage with their peers to build healthy relationships, free from inappropriate language, racist, sexist or homophobic gestures or vocabulary. With many students undertaking new electives in Semester Two, we encourage students to look to connect and develop new friendships.
