YEAR 8 CAMP

YEAR 8 CAMP ADVENTURES!
On a sunny Wednesday, 25th February, the Year 8 students from Korumburra Secondary College rolled through The Summit gates ready to begin an exciting three-day adventure. After checking into their accommodation, the group gathered in the Stadium where they met their coaches and teachers, setting the stage for a camp full of challenge, teamwork, and plenty of laughs.
Before jumping into the activities, the students were introduced to The Summit’s secret recipe for the best camp ever — the Five Keys.
The Five Keys
- Have Fun
- Play All In
- Make Lots of Mistakes
- Get Uncomfortable
- Don’t Go Home Wondering ‘What If’
To prepare for the challenges ahead, the group also learned The Summit’s goal-setting strategy: Target, Stretch, and Super Stretch. This helps students break big challenges into manageable steps — starting with what they know they can do, pushing toward what they think they can do, and aiming for what might feel impossible.
After a quick tour of the park and a safety briefing from Timmay and Lucy on helmets and harnesses, Mim led a warm-up game of 50 Up, giving students a chance to practise their goal-setting strategy before diving into the action.
Activities & Tribe Names
The students launched into their first activity rotations, taking on a wide variety of Summit challenges including:
- Jump Free
- Cave
- Highwire
- Snowy River Challenge
- Summit Window
- Orienteering
Leap of Faith
Each activity pushed students to try something new — whether it was facing heights, working together, or stepping outside their comfort zones.
At the end of the first day, the students gathered back at the BBQ Shelter where they learned about one of The Summit’s favourite traditions: GMICs (Great Moments in Camp). These are written acknowledgements celebrating the courage, teamwork, and funny moments that make camp memorable.
With dinner, teacher announcements, and some free time to finish the evening, everyone headed to bed ready for a huge second day.
Day Two – Intention & Monster Energy
Day Two began with a session led by Mim about setting an intention for the day ahead. Students reflected on how choosing their mindset and attitude can shape their experience and help them achieve their goals.
Next, the group headed to the airfield for a game of Jockeys, getting everyone moving and energised before three activity rotations leading up to lunch.
After lunch, the group warmed up with a few games — including an exciting Tunnel ball tournament — before taking on the ultimate camp challenge.
The Monster Course
The Monster Course is one of the biggest highlights of Summit camp, and Korumburra students were ready for it.
This obstacle course took teams through 11 challenging obstacles, including:
Holy Buckets
Charades
Tyre Pole
Sleds
100s
Ball Puzzle
Big Cargo
Small Cargo
Ball Pit
Barbed and Dangerous
Mud Mounds
But the twist? Completing the course once wasn’t enough.
After finishing the first lap, students discovered they had to complete a second lap, pushing their resilience and teamwork even further. The winning team wasn’t the fastest — it was the team with the biggest improvement between laps.
Mud-covered and exhausted, the students crossed the finish line proud of what they had accomplished.
After showers, dinner, and a chance to relax, everyone settled in for their final night at camp.
Final Day – Storms & Shark Tank
The final day brought an unexpected twist — a dramatic storm rolled in with rain, thunder, and lightning, forcing the group to take shelter under the BBQ Shelter.
But the Summit adventure didn’t stop there.
Instead, students took part in a creative challenge called Summit Shark Tank, where each team designed and pitched a brand-new activity idea for The Summit to a panel of coaches acting as “business sharks”.
Once the weather settled, the students managed to squeeze in their final activity rotation before gathering together for lunch and the camp wrap-up.
Tribe Reflections & Tank Time
Before saying goodbye to camp, the students took part in one final reflection activity called Rock, Stick, and Leaf:
Rock – Something that rocked about camp
Stick – Something they’ll take with them from camp
Leaf – Something they’re ready to leave behind
Each tribe also voted for someone who best embodied the Five Keys during the camp.
Values Winners
Rizzful Rats – Emily
Red Dragons – Shelby
Orange Emus – Lara
Grey Koalas – Kaiden
White Possums – Asher
Blue Wolves – Oscar
These students were recognised by their teammates for their courage, positivity, and leadership throughout the camp.
