The Stand Up Project

On Monday the 15th of December, our 2025 SUP leaders will be presented with leadership certificates for all their work so far in leading the Stand Up Project at Burwood East Primary School. Dr. Zach Greig from the Stand Up Project will be here to present the certificates at assembly.
To reflect on and celebrate all they have achieved this year and their contributions to our overall school goal of building shared language across the community of concepts relating to Friendship Fires, Mean on Purpose and Bullying, I asked the SUP leaders to share something they were proud of or had achieved this year as leaders.
“I feel really great helping other people, with their friendships”
“When I ran my part of the workshop for the Year 2s, I explained things clearly and it helped them understand about friendships. I really like this program”
“I feel proud that I became more confident from this role, I wasn’t that confident to start with”
“I enjoyed teaching the students how to stand up for themselves and others and not be a bystander”
“Improving other children’s confidence to be an upstander was a highlight for me”
“When children have been in a situation, I have loved helping them and to feel like they can then stand up for themselves”
“I liked doing the Year 2 workshop, teaching them about bystander behaviour, I think that this will make a good change in the BEPS community”
“I liked teaching adults and kids about the SUP program, so they have tools to use if they have a problem”
“My confidence- it helped me build up my confidence in myself to do public speaking”
“I really liked how we got to speak in front of a big crowd and we might have stopped mean on purpose situations from even happening!"
“I liked having the feeling that I might have changed someone’s mind or actions to help our school”
“I have impacted people’s lives and helped change their thinking about school and helping it be a safe place for everyone”
The current Year 5 leaders will continue on as SUP leaders in the beginning of 2026, where they gradually move into a mentoring role for the new leaders who put their hands up after they have had their SUP workshop with Dr. Zach. It has been a privilege to see them develop over the year as leaders, not just in terms of implementing the aspects of SUP, but also in their overall skills and confidence in things like public speaking, compromising and collaborating with peers and being positive role models to our whole student community.
