Term 4 STEM Wrap-up

Term 4 STEM Wrap-up

We have had another busy, but productive term in STEM. It has been wonderful to see students from across the school engaged in their learning.

Foundation

The Foundations have been finding out about forces, conducting investigations to find out about pushes and pulls. They have experimented with the shapes, materials and sizes of different objects, and explored how the strength of pushes and pulls determines how far an object will move. Over the past few weeks they have been applying their knowledge to make a push or pull game for others to play.

Year 1 and 2

The Year 1 and 2 students have also been exploring push and pull forces this term, conducting a range of investigations to find out more about the movement of different objects by measuring and comparing their observations. They have used the ‘Sim Lab’ feature on TinkerCad to create a 3D design of a marble run, experimenting with the different materials and seeing how that affects the movement of their ball and the momentum it can gain on their course.

Year 3 and 4

The Year 3 and 4 students have spent a lot of the term being introduced to states of matter, and finding out about their properties. They explored the types of changes that can occur when materials are heated and cooled, such as melting, solidification, evaporation and condensation, and how these can cause a change in the state of a material. Over the past few weeks they have been conducting investigations to find out about which materials can insulate hot water in a cardboard cup the best. Now, they have been using their understandings in this area to come up with a design based on their findings from their experiments.

Year 5 and 6

The Year 5 and 6 cohorts have been deepening their understanding of the properties of solids, liquids and gases and linking them to their arrangement of their particles. They have also been exploring different types of mixtures, such as homogeneous and heterogeneous, and solutions. Now, they have been planning and conducting their own investigations about mixtures and solutions, understanding that scientists share their information with their community and can be used for the basis of new ideas.

Thank you!

On behalf of the Specialist team, I would like to say thank you to the school community for their involvement in our program this year! We look forward to a fun and exciting 2026!
