Spotlight on Learning

Ephesus Community

Dear Families,

During Week 8, students have continued practising for our upcoming Carols Night and are looking forward to sharing their performance with families. In Religious Education, we explored the season of Advent and its message of hope and preparation. Students also commenced their Animal Project, beginning research into habitats, behaviours and interesting facts about their chosen creature. It has been a busy and exciting week of learning and celebration.

This Week's Learning

Religious Education

In Religious Education students are learning that the Christmas story celebrates new life, peace and joy, and invites us to share these gifts with others. They are exploring the message of peace and joy within the story and reflecting on how it can be lived out today. Students are creating their own reflections, prayers or actions that demonstrate ways people can share kindness, hope and joy in their homes, school and community during the Christmas season.

Christmas Carols: Below is the song we will be performing. If you could practise at home, that would be great!

Integrated Learning

In Integrated Studies this week, students are exploring the fascinating world of animals by identifying three facts about an animal’s ecology—where it lives, how it survives, and the environment it depends on—as well as three facts about its behaviours, such as how it finds food, moves, communicates or protects itself. Through research, discussion and observation, students are building their understanding of the important connections between living things and their habitats, while developing curiosity and inquiry skills.

English

In English, students explored the Latin base rupt’, learning to read and spell words using this base and explain their meanings in writing. We also continued reading I Am Ivan, ending on an emotional chapter where Ivan is reunited with Ruby at the zoo. Students discussed how Ruby is now safe and cared for, and how Ivan’s promise to Stella has been fulfilled. Through shared reading and reflection, we discovered that this chapter highlights the importance of keeping promises, showing kindness, and standing by others even when things are difficult. Students expressed feelings of joy and pride for Ivan and identified key messages about bravery, friendship, and the power of small actions to create big change.

Mathematics

In Mathematics, students are learning to collect, represent and interpret data to answer questions they are curious about. Working through guided investigations, they gather information, organise it into tables or simple graphs, and look for patterns that help them understand the results.

Social & Emotional Learning:

In Social and Emotional learning, students are learning about strategies that can help them manage strong emotions. They have been practising calming and coping skills for times when they feel upset, including relaxation and muscle-relaxing techniques. Students are beginning to recognise situations when these strategies might be helpful and noticing how their bodies feel after using them. This learning supports students to build healthy emotional awareness and develop practical ways to reduce tension and feel more settled during challenging moments.
