Year 6

Spotlight on Learning

Bethlehem Community

Dear Families & Friends,

A flashback photo to the beginning of the year when our year 6 students started their journey as leaders of the school - we can all see how they have grown and matured since their Athletics Day.

With thanks to the school, the students have all enjoyed a wonderful lunch at Zeppo's this week.  Occurring on different days, the students walked safely to the restaurant, ate Margarita and/or BBQ chicken pizza, soft drink and were able to chose which flavoured ice cream they preferred.  The Mango Sorbet is one we recommend you try!  Zeppo's itself was quite busy during our times there, however we received very positive feedback from not only the staff but customers about our students behaviour - which was very nice!

Various transition days have begun occurring, with Hillcrest, Rivercrest and St Peters days occuring throughout this week.  Government Secondary Schools hold their day on the 9th December.  When students are out at transition, we carry on with teaching and learning activities in the classrooms and communities.

Next week we look forward to our Bounce excursion on Wednesday.

OUR LEARNING:

Religious Education:

Students are learning to understand the meaning of the second week of Advent and how the theme of peace prepares us for the coming of Jesus. We described how students can find peace within their own or someone else's life. John 14:27, was the scripture used as it links to the theme of peace.  The students were asked to apply the message by suggesting one way they can bring peace to their home, school, or community during Advent.

"Can You See Me" is engaging all students as we enjoy its conclusion.  This week Tally rescued a dog, that other people did not understand.  She showed her skills to deal with a difficult situation, when her father was struck down with appendicitis and the dog was feeling very unsettled.  The character is showing wonderful growth throughout her first year at secondary school, and the students are very interested in seeing how her story pans out.

Mathematics:

This  week students practised creating geometric patterns through rotation, reflection and translation.  Then they performed multiple transformations to build repeating patterns and combined different transformations to create tessellating patterns.  They learned about what shapes tesselate easily while others don't. Next week, students will look at Data.  After reviewing concepts, they will begin an end of term project to decide on a fictional way to improve the schools grounds and resources.  They will need to back their decisions up with the use of data, presenting it in the best way possible to prove their choice.

Integrated Studies:

This term's topic is 'Taking Charge of my Health'.  This week the students learned about emergency situations.  In particular they role played calling 000.

Social & Emotional Learning:

This week we learned how to use guided relaxation and its benefits. When we experience intense emotions, these feelings are ‘embodied’. That means they are felt in our bodies, not just in our minds. Our responses to intense or long-lasting negative emotions might include difficulty sleeping, crying, rapid heartbeat, sweating, nausea, trembling, headaches, difficulty speaking, lump in the throat, difficulty concentrating, having nightmares, being short-tempered or tantrums. To manage these reactions, we often need a way to physically calm ourselves. A guided relaxation is one way to do this.
