Physics fun at Luna Park

Year 12 Physics enjoyed a day of thrills at Luna Park on Thursday 20th November as they explored circular motion and advanced mechanics topics in depth.

A small number of schools had Luna Park to themselves for the day, ensuring the lines were short and the time for thrill-seeking and learning was maximised. We also had a fan moment when we ran into our favourite physics YouTube content creator – Paul Looyen from Physics High.

Throughout the day, students applied physics principles to understand the motion of the Luna Park rides. Students measured rotation periods of the Ferris Wheel, carousel, Volare chair ride and the nauseating Tango Train to examine circular motion and used accelerometers to capture detailed information about centripetal forces whilst stuck to the sides of the Rotor. Students experienced conservation of energy as the rode the ups and downs of the Wild Mouse and the Big Dipper and explained the feeling of weightlessness they experienced using net forces in circular motion.

This excursion was an exhilarating way to gain a deeper understanding of motion and a great opportunity for the class to strengthen their teamwork and have fun learning together.
