Foundation students looked at the symbol for a musical rest and sang the song, ‘Teddy Bear’ which has a rest after each set of lyrics.

In drama

The Foundation students acted out the actions for the Teddy Bear song and thought about their expressions. For example, what face would you have when tying up your shoelaces? Climbing the stairs? Saying your prayers?

The Year 2 students portrayed a short story with a partner after discussing that this nursery rhyme explained what unfolded with the little lamb being taken to Mary’s school. It was lovely to see students co-operating with each other to present us their own imaginative stories.

As the Year 3 students have learnt tempo (slow to fast) terms, in drama, they explored the idea of different situations when they move in certain ways. For example:

  • When they are sleepy, they move slowly

  • When they are calm, they move at a walking pace

  • When they are excited, they use quick motions

  •

Now that the Year 4 students know all 8 notes on the scale, they played a French traditional song, ‘Frere Jacques’ on keyboard and tuned percussion instruments.

After thinking about the lyrics of the song with Brother John being asked to ring the church bells, students dived into the world of drama. In pairs, they were given the task to role-play in a situation where the characters must follow a set of instructions issued by one to the other or given to them both by someone else!

The Year 5 students will be acting out scripts which will include an element of sadness after a brainstorm and discussion to discover how to bring emotions to life and how every story needs a dramatic element to resolve.

The Year 6 students explored the concept of working as a team to act out scripts, presenting mini productions with ‘Thought tracking’ (students are told to freeze and the characters’ thoughts are spoken out loud by someone else) in the class. We focused on some key roles of drama:

  • Creativity

  • Collaboration

  • Communication

  • Confidence
