Grade 3 News

Happy Week 8!

The term is flying past, and we have already had some transitions into Grade 4 classroom spaces.

This week we have finished The One and Only Ivan by Katherine Applegate—a touching and beautifully written story inspired by a real gorilla.

The book follows Ivan, a silverback gorilla who has lived for years in a shopping mall, performing for visitors.

He spends his days watching TV, drawing pictures, and thinking about life. Through Ivan’s eyes, we learn about friendship, hope, and the importance of freedom.

When a baby elephant named Ruby arrives, Ivan begins to see his world differently and finds the courage to make a change.

This story encourages empathy, compassion, and reflection on how animals are treated. It’s a wonderful way to spark meaningful conversations with children about kindness and doing what’s right.

In our writing, we have been looking at persuasive texts around the topic that “Circus should not keep wild animals”.

Looking at persuasive devices, such as language features (connectives, thinking verbs), use of language (using words such as must, definitely) as well as rhetorical questions and subtle warnings.

We are starting to type up our final writing piece- an important letter.

We will watch this movie in the coming weeks!

We are interested to see if the movie and book align.

In Religion, we have been looking at the story of The Lost Sheep.

Jesus told a story about a shepherd who had 100 sheep. When one sheep wandered away and got lost, the shepherd left the 99 sheep to go and find the one that was missing. He searched until he found it, and when he did, he was very happy and carried it home.

The story teaches that every person is important to God. Just like the shepherd cared about the one lost sheep, God cares about everyone and rejoices when someone who is lost comes back to Him.
