As you may know, I was away on Sabbatical for the first three weeks of term. During this time, Mrs Jolliffe and I visited 20 schools and four tertiary institutions across several countries to explore educational trends and gain insights into what is happening in English-speaking education globally.
It was disheartening to see that, in places like England, Scotland, the USA, Canada, and even here in Australia, the education system has, in some areas, failed to meet the needs of young people. In response, many families are turning to independent schools, recognising the value these schools offer—not only in their approach to education but in upholding philosophies that align with family values.
Another striking observation was the resurgence of young people returning to church, particularly led by boys. While there are various theories as to why this is happening, one suggestion is that the world isn’t providing satisfying answers to the big questions young people are asking.
Christianity, by contrast, offers a coherent explanation for the world’s brokenness, our own struggles, and ultimately, a redemptive solution through the saving work of Jesus and the transformative work of the Spirit. As the Spirit works within individuals, it produces character traits that bless and strengthen the communities around them.
So, while it was saddening to hear of the challenges some students face due to flawed educational philosophies, it was also deeply encouraging to witness the extraordinary work being done in many schools—and the hope students are finding in the God of the universe. The Christian message offers clarity and meaning in a world that often feels confusing.
I am still processing all that was learned on this trip and considering how these insights might shape our own school context. I look forward to sharing more in future Bytes articles as we explore what’s possible for our community. I am genuinely excited about what lies ahead.
