Level 1

What a busy and fun-filled fortnight it's been in Level 1!

Students have loved exploring this term's Ethics Inquiry through our Reading, Writing and Maths lessons. 1MY explored ideas related to ethical decision-making by listening to the ABC Kids podcast 'Short and Curly: bite size'. Students unpacked their thoughts on a range of issues before listening to the podcast and then re-evaluated their perspectives using new evidence from the episode. It was interesting to see how many of us changed our minds!

Literacy

To further explore our Inquiry topic and to develop student fluency, expression and collaborative skills, Level 1 students have loved exploring fairy tale and fable Reader's Theatre (mini-plays) this fortnight. Students worked with dedication and excitement to practice their lines, make costumes and perform their story to an audience.

In Writing, students have been developing their own ideas for a narrative story. They have unpacked their ideas using the 'Options Explosion' thinking routine, planned their story using a Story Map and have used adjectives to write a story about their characters, settings, a problem, and a solution. Once students edit these pieces, they are excited to turn their story into a 'real book' using the Book Creator app on the iPads.

Maths

In Maths, students have been exploring the language of location (up, down, left, right, top, bottom, next to, above, and below, etc.). Students have created maps of their classroom and the setting from their narrative story, and have used location language to describe how to get from one part of the map to another. Students have also become 'coders' and 'robots', where they give one another verbal instructions to move around a space. 1MY students have also been using tally marks to gather a range of real-life data to inform us about what our next Gem Jar reward should be!
