Level 5

Camp Weekaway

We were incredibly proud to see students' confidence, resilience and growth mindset grow during all challenges at camp.

Camp activities supported personal and social capabilities, encouraging students to think about what it means to collaborate, be confident, adaptable, and persistent. Students were encouraged to reflect on their strengths and how they can utilise these to support a team through various challenges.

Congratulations to the equal first winners of our Talent Show - Olive and Olivia. We learned so much about bugs. Will and Kaiden also made us laugh with their animal noises in interesting situations.

Kinder connection visits

We are very lucky to have a wonderful relationship with Heathmont East Pre School. Our Level 5 students visit the kinder in Term 2 and during Term 3 the kinder visit us. It was wonderful to see our students mentor a kinder student, read to them, engage in play and display the HEPS values during their visit. What kind and caring Level 6 buddies they will be to the 2026 Foundation students.

Maths

Level 5 Maths has extended upon students' understanding of regular and irregular shapes.  We identified the differences and shared features between irregular and regular polygons and used our knowledge of this to sort shapes in a Venn diagram.

Skills explored in Maths recently include...

  • Spatial reasoning by making a 3D shape
  • Visualising and constructing 3D shapes
  • Identifying common 3D shapes
  • Measuring lengths and angles using a ruler and protractor
  • Collaboration, reasoning, and communication in a team

Spelling

Students have explored spelling rules and tips and tricks to make spelling easier to remember. For example...

SPELLING RULE: How to know which /shun/ to use?

If the root word ends with 'c' or 'cs' use the -cian suffix: magic - magician

When the root word ends with 'd' or 'se' the suffix used is usually -sion: expand - expansion

If the root word ends with 't' or 'te' use -tion: invent - invention

Did you know that our teachers are always looking for ways to improve their knowledge of how to teach spelling? Currently, Level 5 teachers are researching how to improve their knowledge of orthographic spelling skills by learning more about orthographic mapping.

  • Orthographic Mapping:

Orthographic mapping is the mental process of storing words in memory for immediate, effortless retrieval. It's how we recognise and spell words quickly and accurately.
