Student Agency

Last Friday teachers and integration aides participated in a professional learning day focused on refining our practice in student agency. The day was facilitated by Kerri Simpson who has a wealth of experience as a school principal for over 28 years, as well as working in senior roles within the Department of Education.

Student agency is when students are empowered to have an active role in making choices and decisions that shape their learning, wellbeing and experience of school. A key way that students can have agency in their school life is to be part of the goal setting process.

Most learning spaces incorporated some form of goal setting in different areas of learning and wellbeing. This day provided staff with an opportunity to see examples about how students and families are included in the goal setting process at other schools.

All learning spaces, including specialist teachers, developed an action plan to refine their goal setting processes further, with a particular  focus on providing students with greater agency and connections with families.
