Drumbeat Program

As part of our engagement and wellbeing initiatives at Surfside Primary School, we have been coordinating a specialised Drumbeat Program.  Mr. Morzinek and Kellie Hewson have been facilitating our first round of weekly Drumbeat last term and will continue offering another round of this program later this term.  Drumbeat is just one of many wellbeing initiatives here at Surfside such as Ocean Mind Surfing, the Tinkering Program, Bike Education, Snack Shack, the Intergenerational program, Horse Riding and Garden group.

These programs provide a unique opportunity for students to develop prosocial and emotional skills, enhance self-regulation and resilience, and explore new areas of interest.

To support engagement in and out of the classroom, the program outcomes include:

  • Improved wellbeing, including positivity, hope, calmness and mindfulness
  • Stronger connections with peers, staff, and school
  • Development of prosocial skills (e.g. problem solving, co-operation, risk taking etc.)
  • Mastery of a new skill and increased self-esteem
  • Enhanced resilience and emotional regulation
  • Increased motivation and improved communication skills
  • Strengthened sense of belonging and reduced social isolation
  • Mental health strategy development and practise, e.g. mindfulness practices, emotional expression, positive self-talk etc
  • Improved cognitive, physical and gross motor skills, e.g. coordination
