Year 1/2 Learning Community

Growing our brains with Mrs Dallas, Mrs J, and Mrs Jacobs!

ANZAC Day

During our first week back, students in the 1/2 Learning Community learnt a little bit more about why we commemorate ANZAC Day. After watching a short video, we worked together to list facts and interesting things we learnt that we didn't know before. We also learnt some new vocabulary words related to ANZAC Day from the video, and had a go at using these words in our own sentences. Here are some facts the students discovered:

  • The poppies grew where people were fighting.
  • Australia and New Zealand were allies so they could team up to help England.
  • Soldiers didn’t have shops or fridges to get food from.
  • The soldiers landed in Gallipoli to start the campaign.
  • Over 10,000 soldiers died fighting in Gallipoli.
  • 1916 was the first year we commemorated ANZAC Day.
  • 1914 was when the war started.
  • The campaign in Gallipoli went for 8 months.
  • The soldiers had to take it in turns to sleep because they were busy fighting.
  • Rosemary symbolises memory and remembering the soldiers.
  • We commemorate ANZAC Day to remember the people who went to war and who died.
  • ANZAC Day is significant because we remember the people who fought.
  • When people were in the war, it was a time of turmoil when they landed at Gallipoli.

Here are some photos of the sentences we wrote on our own. Look at how we sounded out our words and tried very hard to show our neatest handwriting! Also see if you can spot the students who got ANZAC biscuits in their lunch boxes!

Show and Tell

As part of the English curriculum, students work towards being able to speak in front of groups and share their thoughts, ideas and opinions with others in a clear and coherent way. This also includes being able to listen to others and ask them meaningful questions about their thinking. Part of how these skills are developed is during the age-old Show and Tell!

We have had so many wonderful things brought in to show others and tell everyone about - and this week was no different! Dustin brought in his dog Tilly, and told us all about her. He was able to answer questions other students had about Tilly, and we all got to have a pat.

Thanks for coming to visit, Tilly!
