STEM
Week 1
For the first week of STEM, students completed a variety of activities.
Preps had to use icy pole sticks to re-create the pattern from each card. They also had to use coloured plastic blocks to re-create the numbers 0-9.
Grade 1/2s and 3/4s made predictions on what was going to happen to vinegar in water when a finger was placed in the water without soap on the finger and then what would happen to vinegar in water when a finger was placed in the water with soap on the finger. Everyone made predictions, with some very in-depth discussions occurring. These students then created free-standing towers with pegs and icy pole sticks, with some also using foldback clips.
5/6s used different materials to create a “skeleton” bridge (cotton buds, pegs, icy pole sticks) and a free-standing tower with pegs and icy pole sticks. Some also used foldback clips.
Week 2
Preps explored different objects within the classroom, discussing the materials used to make these.
1/2s looked at properties of materials.
3/4s explored states of matter (solids, liquids, gases) and had to sort objects into whether it would be considered a solid, liquid or gas.
5/6s completed a states of matter investigation on the laptops, by exploring different objects at a scene and having to identify whether the particle arrangement made the object a solid, liquid or gas.
