Year 3/4 News

Learning Centre Two
We hope everyone had a restful and great Term break! It's shaping up to be a busy and exciting term, packed with rich learning experiences and a variety of engaging activities for all students. We’re looking forward to the many opportunities ahead to grow, create and celebrate together in Year 3 and Year 4.
Special Events
Although we had a very short first week of term 1, we learned about ANZAC Day in our Literacy lessons for the week reading, making it relevant to the everyday lives of students through the sharing of memories and significant symbols to commemorate the day.
Athletics Day on Monday 28th April was a huge success with full participation from all students. Please take a look at the photos from the day where students participated in a number of events including; 100 and 200m run, hurdles, javelin, discus, shot put, sack race and three - legged race.
Eucharist Spirituality Day - An important note that next Tuesday 6th May, Year 4 students will be involved in a spitituality day as part of their preparation for receiving the Eucharist for the first time. The Eucharist family workshop is at 6.30pm next TUESDAY night for all Year 4 communicants & families to attend.
As this day falls on the Students’ specialist day, we have swapped our specialist day to Wednesday. All students are to wear their sports uniform next Wednesday please.
Year 4 Camp
On DOJO it has been announced that Year 4 students will have a 2 day camp in the last week of Term 2 at the Log Cabin Camp in Creswick from Wednesday July 2nd to Thursday July 3rd! This will be an important part of student learning and socialisation through the activity based camp. More information will be sent home shortly & there is a parent information night online on June 3rd @ 7pm.
Literacy
In Literacy, our Year 4s have been exploring how navigation features in digital texts such as headlines, drop-down menus, hyperlinks, images and layout can make information easier to find and understand. Students are learning to identify common themes and relationships in stories from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander authors. By comparing different cultural perspectives, the Year 4 students are deepening their understanding of storytelling.
Our Year 3s have been introduced to the genre of Recount where they will read an Indigenous Australian Dreaming Story from Western Australia, learning about the significance of how the land was discovered and how it is preserved by following the Indigenous laws of the land as told by the Nyikina People. Students have been exposed to Indigenous Australian and unfamiliar English vocabulary specific to the Dreaming Story through an interactive online text.
Numeracy
In Numeracy, our Year 4s have been learning to make connections between place value and visual representations, using tools like decimats and number lines. Students are learning to write numbers to two decimal places and accurately place them on a number line, with a key focus on understanding tenths and hundredths. The Year 4s will start exploring Length next week.
Our Year 3s have continued learning about multiplication and division. Students have reviewed repeated addition, subtraction, arrays and the connections between multiplication and division with single digit numbers. They have moved into working with multiples of fives, tens, threes and fours. This will lead into learning about Fractions.
Inquiry
The Year 3 and Year 4 students have been introduced to using Media Arts to recount an Indigenous Australian Dreaming Story on a StoryBoard. Students are creating a media art piece in the form of a poster, trailer, cartoon or digital artwork.
Religion
In Religious Education, Year 4 students are exploring different parts of the Mass and gaining a deeper understanding of its structure and meaning, fostering reflection and celebration of the Mass and their own spiritual lives.
In Religious Education, Year 3 students have been focusing on The Road to Emmaus. Students have been learning about how this is an important Easter story that links to the resurrection of Jesus. They have been looking at the historical context of this story and its relevance to our faith in Christ today.
Wellbeing
To start the new term we have revisited our expectations and routines in line with the Positive Behaviours for Learning matrix. Next week we are continuing our cybersafety program through “Inform and Empower” where we examine healthy digital learning practices and the amount of time we balance between “screen time” and “green time”.
