Learning Centre Three

It’s been a busy and exciting start to the term, even with two short weeks! Students have settled in beautifully and enjoyed a range of special activities and reconnecting with classmates. We’ve made a great start to the term and look forward to all the fun and learning still to come!

Athletics Carnival

Prep students had a fantastic time at the school athletics carnival on Monday! With six fun events to try throughout the day, including vortex throw, bean bag toss, egg and spoon race, standing long jump, hula hoop toss and sack race, it was wonderful to see every child getting involved and giving it their best. The students showed great enthusiasm, energy, and resilience from start to finish. The day wrapped up with a lively 25-metre dash, where everyone joined in to cheer on their friends. We are very proud of all of their efforts!

Phonics

This term, students are continuing to enjoy the story Milo’s Birthday Surprise while learning Stage 2 sounds. They’ve also met some new characters — Ben Bear, Harry Hippopotamus, and Nelly Numbat — who are helping them explore the new sounds. It’s been wonderful to hear students using their growing knowledge to sound out and read new words and sentences with greater confidence.

This week, your child brought home a reading journal and a decodable book in their book bag. Inside the journal, there’s a QR code you can scan to access a digital version of the books we’ve read in class. We encourage you to read with your child each night and return the book and bag every Thursday. A new book will be sent home each Friday.

Literacy

Students began this term by reading the picture book ANZAC Biscuits by Phil Cummings and Owen Swan. After enjoying the story, each learning group made their own batch of ANZAC biscuits. Students took turns adding ingredients to the bowl and mixing them all together. A delicious smell filled the learning centre while they were baking. Of course, the highlight was getting to taste the freshly baked biscuits!

Maths

Students have been learning all about location. They practised using words like in front ofnext toon top of, and underneath while drawing fun pictures to show where things are. They also had a lot of fun programming Bee Bots to move forwards, backwards, left and right.

Students have also been developing their understanding of numbers using part-part-whole. They’re learning that a whole number can be made up of smaller parts — for example, if the whole is 5, the parts might be 3 and 2. They have been playing games with counters and using playdough to explore different ways that numbers can be broken apart.

Religion

Students have been learning about the Easter story. They heard how, on the first Easter morning, a group of women visited Jesus' tomb and were amazed to find it empty. They were told by an angel that Jesus had risen. Students have explored this story through discussions and made puppets which they used to share the story in their own words.

Inquiry

This term in inquiry, students will be learning about Media Arts. They’ve started by thinking about some of their favourite forms of media, such as books, movies, and songs

"My favourite book is Where Is the Green Sheep" - Cindy (Prep Orange)

"My favourite song is Believer" - Rudraveer (Prep White)

"My favourite movie is Frozen" - Ella Rose (Prep Blue)
