Algorithm dominated viewing

How algorithms used by platforms like YouTube, Netflix, and TikTok influence what users see and how they experience content. They are designed to be addictive.

 

3 Steps to Safer Gaming

Knowing exactly what games they play

Educate yourself 

Have a go at co-playing with your kids! 

 

Minimising Tech Tantrums

Transition activity (set up what the activity will be “When the screen time finishes then we will…..”

Setting an appropriate timer (when the episode is over or when they finish the level)

Consequences and follow through 

Create a Family plan (what, where, when and how much screentime).

 

Impacts of screen time:

Sleep MUST be prioritised

Screen time stimulates your brain

Stop use 60 mins prior to bedtime.

 

Messaging Considerations

Group chats

Disappearing messages

Sending nudes - Permanent

Cyberbullying - 52% teens experience cyberybulling across their lifetime. 

 

Grooming and abuse by online predators 

Can happen on any game or app that connects to the internet 

Can happen very quickly

Abuser can be someone known to them or a stranger

Child often doesn't know they are in danger 

Doesn't need to be physical to have a harmful impact.

 

3 things to tell your child today

I can help you sort any problem 

I will love you and support you no matter what has happened

I will not take your device off you if you come to me with a problem.

 

Trusted Adults

At OLA the students have 5 trusted adults; ensure your kids also have 5 trusted adults at home. 

Kids helpline is a great resource for all children to know about.
