Intervention at St John's

Numeracy - Christine Buhler

Extending Mathematical Understanding - Intervention Support

There are 24 students participating in this program this term. They are working hard to build their skills working with numbers. At the end of last term 8 students achieved their goals and exited the program. This made room for 8 more students to be offered a place.

The program offers each student 15 minutes, 4 times per week.

Mathemagicians

Very busy exciting days were held on Monday and Tuesday 12th and 13th May.

50 students participated over the 2 days! The following challenges were investigated.

There was a long multi step problem to solve and a shorter fun activity to get the brain buzzing!

Value for money!  - Year 6

Create, design and budget for a 2-day School Camp. Students proposed 2 Camp options for the ‘class’ to choose from within a budget of $70.00 per person. This included accommodation, food and activities for a 2-day camp. Once completed they had to assess the 2 options and explain their preferred camp.

The Tower of Hanoi is a child’s toy, but its origins are a much harder game! Try your luck! Tower Of Hanoi

Class Party Budgeting - Year 5

Students used calculations relying on money to supply food for a Class Party of 26 students. A complication included the way food is packaged, and how many single items were needed as a minimum. Once the menu was calculated either by item or by menu, they had to find the total cost for the party. Accuracy in every step was important for the final figure!

Fried circuits is a puzzle where lines need to join numbers that add to 10 but may not cross each other!

Spending Spree - Year 3 and 4

Starting with $30.00 students worked their way around a game board, either spending money or making money. The winner was the one with the most left in their account at the end of the game. Handling money, adding and subtracting is a lot of brain work!

Using 7 cards from a pack of cards each student had to find cards whose value totalled a target number. Example do you have cards that can total 25.

Patterns - Year 1 and 2

How many different Robots can be designed using 3 types of heads, 3 types of bodies, 3 types of legs? (Only one of each for each robot!) Year 1 and 2 students were busy building robots and trying to find a solution to the question. Can you???

They also used the number pattern from the Fibonacci Sequence to draw a special spiral found in nature.

MiniLit Sage and MacqLit Literacy Intervention - Fiona Rob

The hallways are buzzing with students engaged in Literacy learning.

This term, the Year 2 and 3 students continue their MiniLit Sage learning journey. Thank you to Damien and Dee for taking over these groups when Mrs Hall retired. The students are busily putting learnt phonemes (sounds) into their reading and writing. It is wonderful to hear them reading the decodable texts with increased confidence.

MacqLit is an explicit and systematic reading intervention program for small groups of older low-progress readers, targeting students in Years 3 to 6. It provides teachers with a comprehensive sequence of lessons that includes all the key components necessary for effective reading instruction: phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary and comprehension.

During Term 1, students were assessed and candidates for MacqLit were selected. Students attend at least four, 1-hour sessions each week. The sessions are taken by Grace, Keira and Lisa. In the short time the program has been running, the students have made positive gains in their learning, recalling taught letter-sound correspondences, reading words rapidly and developing strategies to read multi-syllable words.
