Friday 13th June - Regional Cross Country
Welcome to Year 5, Term 2. Mr McKernan has headed overseas on his amazing adventure and I'm in Year 5 for four days a week, until the end of term. I have really been enjoying this new challenge and Grace and I feel like we are getting a lot out of your students. Lots of learning, lots of challenge and lots of fun!
Experience Days
Year 5 have been very lucky to be able to experience fantastic activities at Euroa Secondary College and FCJ Benalla. The students were treated to cooking, music, Science, PE, Performing Arts and all the great aspects of secondary school. We thank both schools for taking care of us so well. Take a look at some of the new things we learnt...
Winter Sport
We were able to go to Winter Sport, despite the rain, on Friday. We had a great day playing netball, soccer and Teeball. The soccer students really improved a lot over the day and the netball teams had a tough time against tough competition. Our Teeball teams both prevailed and will go to the next level. This will be held next term, so Mr McKernan will be able to provide more details closer to the day.
Literacy
Students in Year 5 have been reading Black Cockatoo and Dirrarn. The students have been deep in discussion about aboriginal culture, totems and The Stolen Generation. I have heard lots of great insights from your thoughtful children. This week we celebrate Reconciliation week and Sorry day, which ties in beautifully. Students have also written a piece for the Euroa Secondary College writing competition. We've been busy!!
Last week I sent parents an email about home reading and spelling expectations. If you didn't receive this email, please contact me on mwatson@sjeuroa.catholic.edu.au
Mathematics
We have been churning through our Ochre Maths program this term. I have urged the students not to just be a passenger, but to take responsibility for their learning in Maths.
We started with fractions and changing from mixed numbers to improper fractions and back again. We have looked at fraction walls and dividing and multiplying fractions.
We also looked at objects and nets. We looked at the packaging that our foods come in and how they design packaging. Students really took to these units and have been engaged and interested. Here is an example of what Ochre asks us to do in these units. We now move to a unit on decimals.
Inquiry - Where in the world is Mr McKernan?
I have challenged the students to become an expert in a country, so we can learn about where Mr McKernan has travelled to and what might this country be like. The students have really taken to his project and we have learnt about different flags, foods and cultural dress. We have talked about how their country is similar and different to Australia and what you might see if you take a visit. Our posters are going to go up in our room and the students are going to tell us all about the country where Mr McKernan is.
Religion
We finished our unit about Easter. We have been learning about Pentecost. We made some posters that we were able to hang up in the main foyer at school. If you at school, please take a look. We are learning about the symbols of the Holy Spirit and the Fruits of the Spirit.
If you have any questions, feel free to either email me at mwatson@sjeuroa.catholic.edu.au
Have a great week!
