Student Leadership News

Community Leaders
(Davide, Jay, Zelie and Mia)
Hello, welcome back to Term 2, we hope you have had a great start back at school. We have exciting news to tell you. This Term, we are going to run Kahoot club. Also, last Thursday we went to visit Renown Kindergarten with Mrs Ferrari and Mrs Borgese to tell parents how AMAZING our school is. There were a few schools who were representing their school as well and there was a presentation by professionals that have worked in kindergartens. Overall we were honoured to represent our school. We are so excited for the extraordinary Term ahead of us and we can’t wait to have more fun with you all!
Wellbeing leaders
(Lavinia, Ethan and Anakin)
As Wellbeing Leaders you know already that we do Zen Zone pack up, set up and supervision. Sometimes we help other groups with the planning and hosting of events. We also help with things that help the school that people don't know about, like putting things into boxes and cleaning the playground, especially the sand pit and the cupboards in the Zen Zone... the little things that make a big difference.
This Term we would like to have a Wellbeing session so that people can come and talk to us about their ideas for the school. We would also like to offer students the opportunity to participate in activities such as skipping, stretching, meditating and yoga with us.
We also have been working on the Walk/Ride/Scoot/Skate Safely To School Day coming up on the 16th of May 2025. Walk safely to school day is an annual event that encourages Primary school kids across Australia to arrive safely at school without using the car. This event is also about feeling safe when walking when doing something different and independent.
Sustainability
(Sebastian, Christina and Willem)
Hi, we are your 2025 Sustainability Leaders. Last Term we organised a Clean Up Australia Day at Alma Park with the 4’s, 5’s and 6’s in house colours to help clean up the oval and basketball courts. Thank you for participating!
Have you noticed how much our garden has grown? We have been busy with the watering cans during break times. Hopefully we get a bit more rain now that we are in Autumn!
This Term we hope to organise a World Bee Day, which will be on the 20th of May. We will organise a Waggle Dance Challenge for the Preps and Year 1’s if they're interested and a colouring competition in the Zen Zone.
Please keep using the bins carefully so that we can continue to look after our environment at St Mary’s.
Faith and Social Justice Leaders
(Olivia, Zoey, Anna and Isaac)
Hello, this is your Faith and Social Justice Leaders. Last Term, we organised two casual clothes days, to raise money for Caritas Australia. Thank you to all the families and students for your generous donations. Due to all your support, we managed to raise a grand total of $504! This money can provide hygiene training for a whole school in Samoa, helping these kids prevent illness with cleaner hygiene practices.
This Term, we are aiming to start a Winter Drive, so we can donate through Vinnies to the homeless, but there will be further details later. You can start donating on Monday 26 May, which is the start of Term 2 Week 6, and will go through until Friday 27 June, the last day of Term 2, which is when we celebrate the Feast of the Sacred Heart. We ask that you donate old coats, jackets, blankets etc, so that everyone can stay warm this winter!
We also wanted to mention that we attended Mass to commemorate Pope Francis. He unfortunately passed on Easter Monday. We hope that the Cardinals will make a good choice for our new Pope to lead all of the Catholic Church. Tomorrow we have a Mother’s and Special Friend's Mass after the breakfast, and everyone is invited to celebrate these wonderful women in our life. We hope to see you all there!
Curriculum Leaders
(Samuel, Sienna, Amy, Allegra and Grace)
The Curriculum Leaders have been doing heaps behind the scenes such as helping organise the library and the books with Miss Kat. We are also excited to announce that Library Club has started! Every Wednesday at second play you are free to come into the Library to take a look at some books, read them, and just relax. We hope to see you at the Library Club!
A reminder that National Simultaneous Storytime is coming on May 21st. Remember Bower Bird Blues last year? This year the book selected to read is Truck Cat by Deborah Frenkel. It is great to be a part of this event with so many other schools around Australia. Did you know that kids doing school lessons in hospitals take part in NSST too?!
Sport Leaders - Cross Country, Netball, and Footy
(Siena, Hugo, Nicholas T, Nicholas G, William and Sheihka)
Last week we had a lot going on and one of those was Cross Country. We had a bus filled with students from Years 3, 4, 5 and 6 ready to run. Out of 7 schools in the Holt District St Mary's came 4th overall, which is really good! The 9/10 year old's ran 2 kilometers and the 11/12 year old's ran 3 kilometers, competing against all the other schools. All of our runners finished well, many in the top 20. We have 5 students that finished in the top 8 and they will race in the next Beachside Division on Tuesday the 27th of May back at Bald Hill Park.
We have also played round one of our Friday Interschool Sport with Netball. Last week we played St Catherine here. The Netballers were all very happy to use our brand new netball hoops set by Mrs Ferrari. We had 2 teams and St Catherine also had 2 teams. Some of our Year 6’s had to show the Year 5's where they’re supposed to be, or which places they’re not allowed to go on the court as there are lots of rules to remember in Netball! St Catherine’s teams have very talented players, many who play with a Netball team on the weekend. Everyone played their best and made some new friends!
We also played our first Interschool Football game and kicked off with a great well-matched game against St Catherine Primary School. St Catherine’s only had 12 AFL players so some of our players volunteered to even up the teams and played on the opposition's side. The next few weeks we will play against other schools in our Holt District, leading up to the Lightning Premiership. This week we play against St Anthony’s in Carnegie and we love hearing our family and friends cheering us on, see you there!
