From the Deputy Principal

Mr James Millane

HOLT District Cross Country

Well done to the St Mary's Cross Country Team (approximately 50 strong!) who ran their hearts out for the school last Thursday 1st May.

Every single student ran to the best of their ability  - overcoming individual challenges and in some cases, absolute adversity, to complete the course, set personal bests or even receive a top 20 place certificate. In every single case, the attitude and effort of every St Mary's runner is to be commended.

Congratulations to the following students, who have progressed through to the next round as a result of a top 8 placing: Pearl V, Orion V, Bela V, Mia H and Samuel B. We know you will represent our school with distinction and wish you the very best of luck!

A huge thank you to Mrs Mason, who organised and coordinated the day, ably supported by Mrs McDonald, Miss Romios,  Mrs Botwood, Mr Buttigieg and Ms. Kat. Thank you all.

National Walk Safely to School Day - Friday 16 May 2025

Next Friday, 16 May, our school will once again participate in the National Walk Safely to School Day. The annual campaign encourages all primary school children, their parents and carers to walk safely and regularly to school. The event seeks to promote road safety, health, public transport and the environment. Children who are regularly physically active are healthier, perform better academically and are less likely to have health issues.

The objectives of Walk Safely To School Day are:

  • To encourage parents and carers to walk regularly with their children, all or part of the way to school.
  • To promote the health benefits of walking and create regular walking habits.
  • To help children develop vital road crossing skills and ensure children up to the age of 10 years hold an adult's hand when crossing the road.
  • To reduce car dependency and traffic congestion, especially around schools.
  • To reduce the level of air pollution created by motor vehicles.

Next Friday morning, students and parents are invited to meet school staff members at 3 surrounding locations in Prahran, Windsor and St Kilda East. Together, students, parents and staff will then walk approximately 1km to school, arriving in time for the school day and a free breakfast courtesy of our P & F. Please see the map below for meeting locations and times. Parents are advised to supervise and walk with their children. If they are unable to do so, please give verbal permission to the staff members at the meeting location Friday morning. We hope to see as many families as possible actively travelling on this day and we hope that the meeting locations and walking routes to school start healthy habits for everyone!

Inform & Empower – Term 2 Student Webinars

Over the  next few weeks, students from Prep to Year 6 will be taking part in this Term’s Inform & Empower webinar series. This Term’s focus is on finding a healthy balance between screen time and green time, with a particular emphasis for our middle and senior students on understanding how screen use before bedtime can affect sleep and wellbeing.  Included below are parent tip sheets tailored to each year level. These not only outline the key learning points from the sessions, but also offer helpful conversation starters for families to continue these important discussions at home.
