Principal Message

Term 1 - Week 6

From the Principal’s Desk

What a joy it is to reflect on the past fortnight filled with vibrant celebrations and meaningful connections within our school community. As we continue to foster unity and celebrate diversity, I am happy to share some highlights from recent events that have truly showcased the strength and spirit of Mitcham Primary School.

Firstly, I want to extend a heartfelt congratulations to everyone involved in the wonderful celebration of Harmony Week. Our Wednesday evening event was nothing short of spectacular, as students, families, and staff came together to honour the beauty of cultural diversity. It was heartwarming to see our students dressed in clothing representing their cultural heritage or in orange, symbolizing their support for harmony and unity. The incredible performances by individual and pairs of students, as well as the whole class songs, filled the evening with joy and pride. I want to extend deep gratitude to Deb Williamson and Glenda Thjin for their exceptional coordination of the event, and to all staff for their attendance and efforts on the night. The Persian New Year coinciding with Harmony Evening added an extra layer of cultural richness to our celebrations. To our Persian families, we extend warm wishes for a joyous and prosperous New Year filled with happiness, harmony, and new beginnings. Happy Nowruz!

Additionally, our Term 1 Fathering Project soccer evening, themed around the excitement of the World Cup, was a resounding success. I want to express appreciation to Laura Ellis, Isaac Delaney, and Nathan Percy for their dedication in organising such an enjoyable and inclusive event. A special thank you also goes out to the Whitehorse Soccer Club for their generous donation of soccer balls, enhancing the sporting experiences of our students.

Furthermore, I am thrilled to announce the outcomes of our first School Council meeting for the 2024 team. We welcomed our 2024 School Council members with open arms, alongside representatives from the Department of Education. Heartiest congratulations are due to Kylie Walsh, our newly elected School Council President, and Lisa Rhind, our newly elected School Council Treasurer. Their commitment and leadership will undoubtedly guide us toward continued success.

Our 2024 School Council members include the following Parent Representatives: Angela Wong, Dijana Fazlic, Gabby Adams, Kylie Walsh, Leesa Carmucinano, Lisa Rhind, Nina McArdle, Shahnaz Davarkhah, and Samantha Ooi, and Department of Education representatives: Erin Norman, Judith Ryall, Michelle Anderson, and Kavita Parmar.

During the open meeting, we shared our 2024 School Annual Implementation Plan, outlining our goals and strategies for the year ahead. Our focus remains steadfast on student learning and wellbeing, with key improvement strategies designed to maximize growth, wellbeing, voice, and agency among our students. As we move forward, let us continue to embrace the values of inclusivity, respect, and collaboration that define our school community. Together, we will navigate the education journey of our students, empowering them to thrive academically, socially, and emotionally.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Warmly,

Erin
