Indonesian News

Shane Merrett

Firstly, I would like to send out a huge congratulations to all of our students at Park Ridge Primary School for their start to the year during Indonesian sessions.  It is so pleasing to see the perseverance and positivity being demonstrated by all year levels and their willingness to give things a go.

Foundation

Our Foundation students have been full of enthusiasm when learning Indonesian songs, simple greetings and establishing routines.  They have particularly enjoyed meeting my puppets.  Seeing their smiling faces every day is very encouraging.

Year One

The Year 1 students have been learning their Indonesian numbers through song, games and repetition.  They have recently been introduced to the Indonesian numbers for 11-20 as well as colours.  In the coming weeks, students will be introduced to Indonesian picture story books and comparing them to ones they have already seen.

Year Two

The Year 2 students have been learning about farming techniques in Indonesia particularly focussing on the Rice Growing Cycle.  They are understanding the importance of rice around the world.  In the next few weeks, they will be producing a Rice Growing Cycle Flow Chart.

Year Three

Year 3 students are currently learning about contemporary Indonesian culture in regards to clothing, geography, transport, building, farming, environment, schooling, cooking & shopping.  We are then comparing to other Asian countries and our own cultures here in Australia.

Year Four

The Year 4 students have been working on understanding and answering basic questions asked of them in Indonesian.  Some students are answering in full Indonesian sentences and others with one word or short phrase answers. The questions they are asked are about the weather, their age, name, address & basic greetings.  Once again, I have been very impressed with their efforts.

Year Five

The Year 5 students have been learning common Indonesian phrases used in context.  We recently played a whole class game outside where the students were asked to only use Indonesian words to encourage each other.  We will be reading a contemporary Indonesian book in class in the next few weeks focussing on the diverse cultures within Indonesia.

Year Six

The Year 6 students are currently learning about the different islands in Indonesia and the diverse and unique cultures within them. Earlier in the term the students were exposed to more complex sentences in Indonesian and were given the opportunity to respond to them in Indonesian.  In the next few weeks we will be learning how to pronounce and read for purpose in Indonesian.
