Year 9 Make a Difference

On Wednesday morning three Year 9 students ran a chapel on the topic of ‘Refugees’. This was part of their Make a Difference (MAD) Project. At the start of the term all Year 9 students were challenged with creating a project, with an action, which would positively impact people in our community. Thomas, Henry, Samarth, and Armaan wanted to raise awareness of a social justice issue. They explored several options before deciding on the topic of refugees. I spoke to the group about ‘Pancakes for Ukraine.’ This is an event that the Christian Living Faculty was in the process of organising to support the launch of ALWS’ 100 days of action to help children and families hurt by the war in Ukraine. The group decided that they would make this the focus of their chapel. They wanted to help our school community to learn more about the challenges faced by refugees and the importance of empathy and support.

Year 10 ALWS Incursion

As part of our Year 10 curriculum on 'Refugees', our students had the opportunity to participate in an interactive workshop run by Josie from ALWS (Australian Lutheran World Service) on 2 April. The workshop aimed to deepen students’ understanding of the experiences of refugees and the challenges they face. Through personal stories and case studies, our students gained insight into the impact of war and poverty on women, children, and families in refugee camps. They also learnt about the important work being done by ALWS in countries such as Djibouti, Kenya, and Ukraine.

Year 10 Refugee Week

Youth Poster Competition

In Week 11, students completed their final summative task of the term. In this task they were asked to draw inspiration from class-based learning to reflect on the choices and challenges facing refugees and displaced persons when they are forced to leave their homes. We selected ten posters to be entered into the SA Refugee Week Youth Poster Competition, hosted by Australian Migrant Resource Centre, which celebrates the courage, resilience, strength, and contributions of people of refugee background. We wish all entries the best of luck.

Pancakes for Ukraine

Thursday morning the Food Technology and Christian Living Faculties came together to host a pancake breakfast to raise funds to support the work of ALWS (Australian Lutheran Wolrd Service) in Ukraine. The pancake breakfast was a wonderful opportunity for our school community to come together.

Not only did we have a wonderful time, but we also managed to raise significant funds for ALWS in Ukraine. This money will go towards supporting their important work in providing aid and assistance to those in need.

Business Innovation Week

The Year 11 Business Innovation students presented some of their innovative ideas during the lunchtimes of Monday to Wednesday this week. The loaded potato balls were an absolute hit, while some students commented that the sorbet being sold was the best they had ever tasted. Beyond food, some groups printed stickers as a marketing campaign for a brand collaboration, while another sold charm kits and ran a charm-making workshop. Our final stall ran a raffle while distributing information about their clothing and accessory pairing app.

Overall, it was a fantastic learning experience and it was wonderful to see some students stepping outside the conventional 'food stall' approach and trying more revolutionary ideas. Half of the profits will go to SA Vietnam Charity Group.

Thank you to all who supported the students and filled in their surveys, as the information collected will inform their next stages of their task and will lead them into Shark Tank!
