The Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge is now open and Essendon North Primary School is excited to be participating again in 2024.

The Premier's Reading Challenge encourages children and students from birth to Year 10 to read a set number of books over the year and record their efforts online before the closing date in September. Since the Challenge first began in 2005, more than three million students across Victoria have read nearly 50 million books! The Challenge is not a competition but an initiative to develop lifelong readers and learners.

Children from Foundation to Year Two are encouraged to read or ‘experience’ 30 books with their families. Children from Year Three to Year Six are challenged to read 15 books. There is an official reading list with over 12,000 age-appropriate titles, many of which are in the school library but books from home, a public library or e-books can also be read.

All Essendon North Primary School students are automatically registered for the Challenge but only those students who wish to take part will be given their login details. These login details allow students access to the official Reading Challenge website and their personalised online reading log where they are required to record their reading (younger students will require parent help to log their reading). All children who meet the Challenge will receive a certificate of achievement signed by the Victorian Premier!

If you would like your child to take part in the Challenge, or have any questions, please email me at the following address julie.schenk@education.vic.gov.au. Alternatively, there will be an enrolment sheet in the library until the end of term which students may sign and register themselves.

Please note that this is an extracurricular activity run through the library, not by classroom teachers. It is not a compulsory activity, but students are strongly encouraged to take part.

More information about the Premiers’ Reading Challenge can be found at: www.vic.gov.au/premiers-reading-challenge.

Just a friendly reminder that all students are required to bring a library bag each week as students are unable to bring books home without a bag. Library bags protect our books from rain, water bottle leaks and food spillages. Families may use any bag such as a cloth tote bag or a supermarket environmental bag.
