Year Four Team News

with Rebecca, Brittlee, Toni & Matt

Hello Year Four families,

Fortnightly Curriculum Focus

Literacy: In Reading, Year 4 students are continuing to build on their comprehension strategies through the novel Fearless Frederic by Felice Arena. We are coming to an end with this novel as the term draws to a close. Students have used this text to form and answer different types of questions such as literal and inferential. The students have also continued to work on their independent reading goals.

In Writing, we have been working our way through the Writing Process. Working with the mentor text Harriet, you’ll drive me wild by Mem Fox. Students were tasked to reflect on sentence structures and different attributes that make a sentence such as a noun, verb, subject, object and adjectives. Students have then continued to read through this story, adapt it by changing key features to rewrite and make their own narratives. This helps students understand the importance of word choice in their writing.

Numeracy:  In Numeracy, Year 4 students have started a new unit of Time. Students have been working with analogue clocks, utilising interactive online clocks also to support their learning in this area. Students have been challenged to convert their time from digital clocks to analogue clocks. Students are continuing to use online programs such as Essential Assessment, reinforcing skills whilst targeting specific individual goals.

Inquiry: Students this fortnight have explored how solids and liquids change and what components make these changes. In week 8 students will have a free incursion with SciencePlay Kids. This incursion will focus on the following,

  • Students hypothesising, testing, observing, categorising and then identifying patterns around properties of materials.
  • During these explorations we really focus on celebrating mistakes and how much we can learn from making them.
  • Students use the learnings from their findings to then make their own functional paper circuit. Students will then work on a model of a city where they have to build bridges, towers and plumb in working water systems.

Reminders:

Parents are welcome into our classrooms on Thursday 21st March from 3:15pm-4pm for the Open Afternoon.
