Year One Team News

with Anna, Zoe, Edan & Claire

Hello Year One families,

Congratulations on making it through to the end of Term 1 in 2023. What a huge year we’ve had already!  This week we have acknowledged Neurodiversity Week and Harmony Day today which was a lovely way to celebrate what makes us all unique whilst also celebrating how we all belong. We are looking forward to celebrating the end of term with the much anticipated Easter Hat Parade next Thursday. The Year One team would like to wish all Grade One families a Happy Easter and safe holidays - we know you all deserve the long two week break! We look forward to hearing about the wonderful adventures you’ve had over the holidays and catching up with you all upon your return in Term 2.

Curriculum Focus: Weeks 1 - 2

Reading:  Term 2 will see the beginning of stage 7.2 in the Little Learners Love Literacy program. We will begin by looking at the phoneme /ar/ represented by the grapheme ar.

Writing: We will begin the term with holiday recounts, and move on to planning, writing and revising a narrative.

Numeracy: The Year 1s will begin by revising and extending their knowledge of place value through games and problem solving challenges.

Inquiry: Our big question next term is “How and why do we care for animals and how do animals care for us?”

Willy Kids/Respectful Relationships:

Through the pillar of Learning, our focus is “Willy Kids are Ready to Learn”. We will discuss the different aspects of being ready to learn including what our bodies are doing and what our minds are thinking. During our Respectful Relationships sessions our topic this term is Personal Strengths. We will be learning to identify and describe personal strengths, explain how these strengths contribute to school and family life, as well as identifying ways to care for others, including ways of making and keeping friends.

Specialists

Term 2, all Grade 1s will attend Specialist classes. These include Visual Art, Music, French and Physical Education. At this stage the timetable will be staying the same as Term 1, although slight changes may happen early in Term 2, so please keep checking the newsletter for updates.

Animal Land Excursion

For our excursion to Animal Land on Wednesday the 17th of April, we will need some parent helpers to come along. You will need to have completed the online parent helper course and have a valid Working with Children Check that has been sighted by the office. If you would like to come along please let your classroom teacher know. The event is open on Compass for you to pay and give your consent for your child to attend.

Hats

As we head into the winter months it is no longer compulsory for students to wear their hats outside at lunch and recess in term 2 and 3. However, students can continue to wear them if they wish.

Warm regards,

The Grade One Team –  Zoe Kitchen & Anna Swan (1K), Edan Bacegga (1B) & Claire Davies (1D)
