Prep Team News

with Caitlin, Hayley & Andrea

Hello Prep families,

We cannot believe we are coming to the end of Term One for our Preps. What a wonderful start to school our students have had. Thank you to those families that visited our classrooms this week as part of our Open Afternoon. There were lots of big smiles as the Preps shared their classrooms and work samples with families. We would like to thank all of our families for their wonderful support this term and wish you all a safe and enjoyable holiday break.

Easter Hat Parade

Next Thursday, Willy Primary will have their annual Easter Hat Parade. Students are invited to wear Easter themed headwear. Parents are welcome to come and watch the parade which will commence from 9:15am on Thursday 28th March on the basketball court. Here are some possible hat ideas to inspire you!

Holiday Reading

The Prep students have now all bought home their green Take Home Reading Record in their blue book bag. We ask that as part of the daily home reading routine, you record the date and title of the book read with your child each day. At the moment, the title of the book you will record is a book you have chosen to read to your child. We encourage families to please keep recording your reading over the holidays, to emphasise the importance of daily reading. The Prep team are looking forward to giving out many 20 nights of reading awards at the start of Term Two.

Curriculum Focus: Weeks 7 - 8

Reading - Students will learn about appropriate reading behaviours, for example direction of print and caring for books. They will also discuss book features such as the front cover, pictures and text. As part of our Little Learner’s program, students begin the year learning single letter sounds, with our current focus being the /t/ and /c/ sounds. To help us remember these sounds, we have met Tim the turtle and Cooper the caterpillar. There are songs about these characters available online, which you may like to listen to with your child at home or in the car:

Tim Turtle Song - Spotify

Cooper Caterpillar Song - Spotify

Writing - Students are learning to write their name, correctly form letters, trace over a modelled piece of writing and copy it underneath. This week we are focusing on forming the letter ‘c’.

Numeracy - Students are learning to graph information about themselves, their classmates and their school. They are also finding different ways to represent a number by starting our count to 100 Days of School.

Inquiry - Students are investigating how Willy Kids can be successful and engaged learners.

Homework - Each Monday, students will be given an activity to complete at home that relates to our weekly sound focus. The activity in their ‘Home Learning Book’ will be collected each Friday. Homework in Prep should take no longer than 15 minutes.
