Prep
Students have been continuing to participate in songs and games based on the music element of Tempo. They have also learnt what body percussion is and how to read beat and symbols that represent body percussion sounds.
Year 1
Students have been working on the song Kye Kye Kule from Ghana. They are able to do the actions and read the music notation for this song and play it on a range of percussion instruments.
Year 2
Students have been learning the song “Poor Old Cinderella”. They have worked in small groups to create actions for a verse and have also started reading and playing the music notation for the song on percussion instruments including the marimbas.
Grade 3/4
Students have worked together with a partner to write a 4 line verse in AABB form about friends. They have rehearsed this and shared their verse in the “Friendship Rap” song.
Grade 5/6
Students have selected a small group to work with and a song to parody. They have created a new set of lyrics and have rehearsed singing these to a karaoke track. They will share their work at the start of next term.
Music Clubs
Choir
The Willy Primary Choir rehearse each Wednesday from the start of lunch for about 20 – 30 minutes. Please return permission notes to Lynne Georgiadis.
Marimba Band
A meeting will be held at recess on the last day of term where students selected for the bands will be announced.
Rock Band Timetable
Over the last two weeks it has been terrific to hear 17 students audition for vocals in the Rock Band. As always it will be a hard decision for me to make with many great singers amongst the cohort. I would like to commend all students who tried out for preparing the set songs for their auditions.
Week 8 | Thursday 21st March | Guitar Auditions |
Friday 22nd March | Keyboard Auditions | |
Week 9 | Monday 25th March | Drums Auditions |
Thursday 28th March | Meetings for Bands selections at recess |

Wominjenka everyone.
It is difficult to believe that we are nearly at the end of Term One. Even though it has been a short term, it has been a busy one. The Preps have begun their Art Adventure, and work has begun for 2024 Art Show.
All Grades have read, “I Am Lupe’ written by Sela Ahosivi-Atiola, in preparation for Harmony Day on March 21. I Am Lupe is a book that acknowledges that we all have our own unique characteristics that make us who we are and that we are all different. The kids created a framed picture of themselves encircled with a list of the attributes that make them who they are. In Willy Kid Style, there were lots of fabulous characteristics. Our kids are friendly, helpful, grateful, kind, daughters, big sisters, middle children, only children, younger brothers, smart, respectful, funny, sporty, creative, artistic, musical, fast, loyal, brave, generous, ambitious and happy. Some of the students also included little messages in their artwork, messages that we could all learn from. To quote Hamdi, ‘Everyone is welcome’, Hugo reminded us that, ‘We all belong’, Yusuf said, ‘We all fit in’, and finally, in the words of Martha & Rose, ‘Be Yourself’. Happy Harmony Day everyone.
With Easter fast approaching, the Preps have made crayon and dye Eggs. These are bright and colourful. The Grade Ones have collaged Easter bonnets to remind everyone to state creating their own hat for the Easter Hat Parade. The Grade Twos have produced little sculptured eggs with an assortment of designs to hang outside the office.
The Senior School kids are beginning different activities in readiness for the Art Show. Can’t give away too much information in this area.
As if that is not enough, the Art Room has been buzzing with kids working on their entries to enter in the Hobsons Bay Art Society 5x7 Art Prize. Win, lose or draw, the important thing about this competition is that these kids get to have their work shown in a ‘real’ art exhibition. The 5x7 Art will be on display at the Louis Joel Community Centre from 6th -24th April. So, if you have time in the second week of the school holidays go along and have a look.
Speaking of holidays, I am getting the kids to set some goals for the holidays. One being what art can you create or work on, and the other being, where can you go to see artwork on display? I have two recommendations for you. One, visit the NGV and see the Triennial Exhibition and Two, visit The Lume to see the new Leonardo da Vinci exhibition. I’m really looking forward to seeing the second on my list.
Until next time, enjoy the holidays, stay safe, have fun, be happy and keep creating art!

‘Je Suis MOI Et Tu Es TOI’
Bonjour! At Willy, we have worked hard in the French room at introducing ourselves extensively in French in the last couple of weeks. Year 5/6s have done a stellar job with the following script:
‘Bonjour, je m’appelle… . Je suis australien(ne). J’ai …ans. Je suis en classe … et mon école s’appelle WPS. J’habite a …, en Australie. L’Australie est en Océanie. Mon papa s’appelle … et ma maman s’appelle … . Mon sport préféré est le/la … .’
All year levels worked on fun play-like conversations about themselves, differentiated with various levels of complexity. Colourful wigs, fake noses, musical box for sound effects, etc…, we experimented and played around with various props to bring interest and depth to our French fluency skills in the classroom.
To finish off the term…:
Year 1s, 2s and 3s will respectively be singing to the ‘Je suis MOI et tu es toi’ (I am me and you are you), ‘Mon corps’ (my body) and ‘Ma famille’ (my family) songs.
Year 4s and 5/6s will be playing the friendly competitive team whiteboard games on their respective topics of ‘Ma classe’ (my classroom) and ‘Mon école’ (my school).
NOTE: As Preps begin their journey in the French room in Term 2 😊, Year 5/6s will be doing Kitchen Garden with Kate…. Until we meet again in the French room in Term 3.
