Year 5/6 Team News

with Laura, Christina, Emil, Molly, Bianca I, Kayleen, Steven & Melati

Hello Year 5/6 families,

Literacy

In Literacy, students are in the process of writing information reports. They have chosen an animal or plant and delved into researching its adaptations. From the camouflage of chameleons to the powerful jaws of crocodiles, students have been captivated by the incredible ways in which living organisms have evolved to thrive in their environments. We have looked particularly at writing introductions, choosing catchy sub-headings and utilising high-level scientific vocabulary.

Numeracy

As we near the end of our unit on Operations in Numeracy, students have been honing their skills in addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. While we wrap up this unit, it's important for students to continue practising their multiplication and division at home, especially over the upcoming school holidays. Daily rehearsal of multiplication facts can significantly improve fluency and confidence in mathematical operations, setting students up for success in future maths endeavours.

Inquiry

As part of our unit on adaptations, our students had the exciting opportunity to embark on an excursion to the Jawbone Marine Sanctuary. Here, amidst the thriving ecosystem of mudcreepers, pelicans, and mangroves, students engaged in hands-on fieldwork to observe and document adaptations in action. It was a fantastic opportunity for our students to apply their classroom learning in a real-world setting, deepening their understanding of adaptations and the interconnectedness of living organisms within their habitats. We will wrap up the unit next week with a short informal presentation to the class about their learning.

Cosmetics at school

We have noticed a significant increase in the number of students bringing make up, perfumes and aerosol deodorants to school. We recommend that the application of personal care products occurs at home. Aerosol sprays should not be used at school and students must not be applying make-up on-site before school or at recess and lunch.
