Senior School News

Can you believe it's already the end of term? Time truly flies when you're having fun and learning!

Canberra Camp

Our Grade 6 students recently embarked on an unforgettable journey to Canberra, flying both ways for a thrilling three-day adventure. During their time there, they explored significant landmarks such as the War Memorial, Parliament House, National Canberra Museum, Questacon, and the Australian Institute of Sport. For a firsthand account of their experiences, check out the Captains Corner in this newsletter.

Journey to Canberra

The Grade 6 Run-A-Thon Challenge: Let's give a round of applause to our Grade 6 students who completed the remarkable "Run to Canberra" challenge, covering 689 km from Sacred Heart Sandringham to Parliament House. Not only did they surpass this distance, but they collectively ran over 850 km! Furthermore, they raised an impressive $4000 through their fundraising efforts. A heartfelt thank you to everyone who supported them. What an incredible achievement!

NAPLAN Success

Congratulations to our Grade 5 students for successfully completing their NAPLAN testing last week. Despite the long and challenging week, they demonstrated resilience and gave each test their best effort. We couldn't be prouder of their hard work!

Academic Highlights

At Sacred Heart, our academic scene is vibrant with activity. Grade 6 scholars recently delved into a math unit on perimeter, mastering the concept and applying it to solve worded problems. In English, they expanded their vocabulary by focusing on the prefix "em" and explored the use of speaking verbs in writing syntax. Meanwhile, Grade 5 students honed their summarization skills and delved into morphology, dissecting morphographs and applying prefixes and suffixes.

Stations of the Cross

With Holy Week approaching, both Grade 5 and 6 students have been deeply engaged in gospel narratives and the Stations of the Cross. They transformed scripture into scripts and delivered a poignant rendition of the "Stations of the Cross." We extend ourgratitude to the parents who joined us to support our students during this meaningful event.

On Tuesday the 19th of march at 5:30am the year 6 students headed off on their adventure to Canberra. This camp was new to everyone. The year 6 students had the opportunity to fly on a plane to Canberra for the very first time. It was a jaw dropping  experience for all.

When we landed we headed straight to the national capital exhibition , where we learnt about the history and the creative structure of canberra.

After that we went on our way to the Royal Australian mint exhibition where we learnt about how coins are produced and the history behind different coins.

Later that afternoon our bus driver Col, who made our trip very enjoyable, took us on a bus tour around the different embassies and high commissions where we found out that America has the biggest embassies in Australia.

Our last afternoon activity was a trip to the AEC where we had the opportunity to vote and play different roles in a mock election.

Finally after going and checking out our cabins at the bush camp lodge we headed to the water park for a swim.

We woke up the next morning and traveled straight to the AIS (Australian Institute of Sport)where we learnt about all the different sports the olympians play and compete in. There was also a room where we could play different interactive sports games like soccer, cycling and basketball. They also showed us some of the different facilities that the athletes use.

Our next stop was the high court where we learnt all about the different stages of court and the real meaning behind democracy and the different roles in court.

Then we went to Questacon and it was a really fun experience learning  about science and physics. There was even a really big slide that we dropped down. At the end there was a shop where we spent our money on different science and physics games but most kids got freeze dried lollies.

That night we went bowling at zone bowling which was a big hit. It was a sublime time for all. Finally we got a big night's sleep for the next day, where we dove into the history of the war memorial. We saw both world war one and two events. We also got to conduct a memorial ceremony. It was a staggering experience for we had the luck of having a professional doing the last post played on a bugle.

After that we went on  a tour of Anzac Parade. Our guide showed us all the wars Australia fought in, each one had a different meaning behind its unique sculptural view.

Finally we went to the parliament house, seeing the house of senate and the house of representatives and what jobs the people do there. When we were there we did a mock passing of a bill in the  House of Representatives and then we had a tour of Question time in the Senate and House of Representatives. We even saw Anthony Albanese. Then saw Zoe Daniels and asked her some questions about her job and what she does. Then they gave us frozen yogurt and then we headed back home on the plane. We headed to the Airport and said our last goodbyes to Cole, and off we went soaring through the air like superman. We arrived back at school at about 9:30pm and we went and fell straight asleep.

Never stop smiling, it's contagious, see you after the school holidays. Happy Easter (we hope you get lots of chocolate ).
